Enormous wave dwarfs surfer on coast of Portugal

By Natalia Jimenez, NBC News

Surfer Garrett McNamara catches what could be the largest wave ever surfed, off the coast of Nazare, Portugal, on Jan. 29. The estimated 100-foot wave, if confirmed, would beat the current world record of 78 feet, which McNamara has held since 2011. According to SurferToday.com:

Garrett McNamara traveled from Hawaii and hit the water with Kealii Mamala - with whom he surfed waves generated by glacier blocks in Alaska - Kamaki Worthington and Hugo Vau, as their support team on the jet ski. The conditions in Nazar? were heavenly perfect. Light southern winds and strong swell coming from northwest and hitting the local canyon as it should.

Judges with Billabong XXL Global Big Wave Awards will work to determine the actual size of the wave.

McNamara's surfing skills developed when his family moved to Hawaii from Pittsfield, Massachusetts, when he was 11 years old. As a professional big wave surfer, he regularly seeks out the largest waves in the world.

"It's like riding a moving mountain," said McNamara to TODAY after he broke the last world record in 2011. Watch the video.

New Pentax camera is rugged - and a bit odd-looking

14 hrs.

If you're looking for a rugged point-and-shoot to take with you on vacation, you could do worse than the latest from Pentax ? if you can get past the rather loud design of the things.

The new WG-3 ticks the usual ruggedness boxes: Waterproof to 45 feet, handles a drop from 6 feet?and can withstand being sat on by a full-sized human being. What the WG-3 adds is a much brighter lens and a secondary display for statistics about the environment.

That new lens is a 4x zoom compared with the WG-2's 5x, but its maximum aperture of F/2 is far better than its predecessor's or any of the other rugged cameras we've shared word about?this week. Combine that with a back-illuminated 16-megapixel sensor that can go up to 6400 ISO, and you've got quite an all-purpose picture-taking machine.

The WG-3's new ambient readings display can show cardinal directions, elevation or depth ? handy when you're going from a mountain?peak to coral reef?in the tropics. Puzzlingly, the display is on the front of the camera, probably because your elevation isn't usually critical to the composition of the shot.

There are two downsides to the WG-3. One is what you see ? the WG series has never been low-key, but the level of flair on this model borders on ridiculous. Be careful in the jungle or a tropical bird or beetle might just try to befriend it. Fortunately, it comes in sober black as well.

The other trouble is that it's a bit on the high end price-wise at $300, or $350 with built-in GPS. Not everyone is willing to pay that kind of premium for a point-and-shoot, although from the specs it appears this Pentax is worth the money. (There's also a cheaper WG-10 that will be available in April, but it makes a few too many compromises for our taste.) The cameras ship in March, so you've got plenty of time to decide.

Historical society's holiday ceremony collects $200 for Bath Area ...

WEST BATH, Maine ? The Bath Area Food Bank is the recipient of a generous donation gathered by the West Bath Historical Society at its annual yuletide candlelight Christmas service.

Each year, the event?s offering goes to a local, nonprofit organization, according to Avery Meyers, the historical society?s president. This year, that tallied $200.

?We are pleased to be able to offer this donation as part of our commitment to the local community,? said Meyers. Kimberly Gates, the food bank?s director of public relations, said the $200 would be used to purchase about $1,600 worth of ?much-needed? food from the Good Shepherd Food Bank.

?We thank organizations like the West Bath Historical Society, who help make it possible to continue our mission,? said Gates.

The Christmas service, which the historical society has played host to for 12 years, was held at the historic Old West Bath Meeting House on Berry?s Mill Road. The ecumenical service included the reading of Scriptures and poems, including a Buddhist prayer for peace.

The Bath Area Food Bank serves Bath, West Bath, Phippsburg, Woolwich, Georgetown and Arrowsic. The organization funds both the Food Pantry at the United Church of Christ in Bath and the Soup Kitchen at the First Baptist Church in Bath. Anyone who wants to help support the organization can send donations to the Bath Area Food Bank, P.O. Box 65, Bath 04530.

British embassy in Tripoli aware of report of threat against it

TRIPOLI (Reuters) - The British embassy in the Libyan capital said it was aware of reports of a potential threat against it, days after London urged British nationals to leave the eastern city of Benghazi due to a "specific and imminent threat" against Westerners.

"We are aware of reports of a potential threat against the British embassy in Tripoli and we are liaising closely with the Libyan government," an embassy spokeswoman said on Monday.

"There is no change to our travel advice, we still recommend against all but essential travel to Tripoli."

No further details were given. Britain has warned of a growing militant threat in North Africa, which Prime Minister David Cameron has called a "magnet for jihadists".

This comes after the deaths of at least 38 hostages in an attack on Algeria's In Amenas gas complex near the Libyan border, and the start of French military operations in Mali.

Libyan officials said they were not aware of such reports, cited by the embassy.

"The British embassy has not informed us of any threats towards it and there has been no coordination between us," Deputy Interior Minister Omar al-Khadrawi told Reuters.

"We were meeting with the foreign affairs ministry this morning and are not aware of any threats. This could be a way the British embassy is trying to justify its previous Benghazi advisory."

Last week's call, echoed by other European countries, to leave Libya's second largest city irked Libyans keen to win foreign investment to rebuild a fractured infrastructure and boost the oil industry after the 2011 revolution which toppled Muammar Gaddafi.

Sometimes a nickel is worth millions

13 hrs.

A humble 5-cent coin with a storied past is headed to auction and bidding is expected to top $2 million a century after it was mysteriously minted.?

The 1913 Liberty Head nickel is one of only five known to exist, but it's the coin's back story that adds to its cachet: It was surreptitiously and illegally cast, discovered in a car wreck that killed its owner, declared a fake, forgotten in a closet for decades and then found to be the real deal. It all adds up to an expected sale of $2.5 million or more when it goes on the auction block April 25 in suburban Chicago.?

"Basically a coin with a story and a rarity will trump everything else," said Douglas Mudd, curator of the American Numismatic Association Money Museum in Colorado Springs, Colo., which has held the coin for most of the past 10 years. He expects it could fetch more than Heritage Auction's estimate, perhaps $4 million and even up to $5 million.?

"A lot of this is ego," he said of collectors who could bid for it. "I have one of these and nobody else does."?

The sellers who will split the money equally are four Virginia siblings who never let the coin slip from their hands, even when it was deemed a fake.?

The nickel made its debut in a most unusual way. It was struck at the Philadelphia mint in late 1912, the final year of its issue, but with the year 1913 cast on its face ? the same year the beloved Buffalo Head nickel was introduced.?

Related:Are you struggling in the suburbs? We want to hear from you.

Mudd said a mint worker named Samuel W. Brown is suspected of producing the coin and altering the die to add the bogus date.?

The coins' existence weren't known until Brown offered them for sale at the American Numismatic Association Convention in Chicago in 1920, beyond the statute of limitations. The five remained together under various owners until the set was broken up in 1942.?

A North Carolina collector, George O. Walton, purchased one of the coins in the mid-1940s for a reported $3,750. The coin was with him when he was killed in a car crash on March 9, 1962, and it was found among hundreds of coins scattered at the crash site.?

One of Walton's heirs, his sister Melva Givens of Salem, Va., was given the 1913 Liberty nickel after experts declared the coin a fake because of suspicions the date had been altered. The flaw probably happened because of Brown's imprecise work casting the planchet ? the copper and nickel blank disc used to create the coin.?

"For whatever reason, she ended up with the coin," her daughter, Cheryl Myers, said.?

Melva Givens put the coin in an envelope and stuck it in a closet, where it stayed for the next 30 years until her death in 1992.?

The coin caught the curiosity of Cheryl Myers' brother, Ryan, the executor of his mother's estate. "He'd take it out and look at it for long periods of time," she said.?

Ryan Myers said a family attorney had heard of the famous 1913 Liberty nickels and asked if he could see the Walton. "He looked at it and he told me he'd give me $5,000 for it right there," he said, declining an offer he could not accept without his siblings' approval.?

Finally, they brought the coin to the 2003 American Numismatic Association World's Fair of Money in Baltimore, where the four surviving 1913 Liberty nickels were being exhibited. A team of rare coin experts concluded it was the long-missing fifth coin. Each shared a small imperfection under the date.?

"The sad part is my mother had it for 30 years and she didn't know it," Cheryl Myers said. "Knowing our mother, she probably would have invested it for us. She always put her children first."?

Since its authentication, the Walton nickel has been on loan to the Colorado Springs museum and has been publicly exhibited nationwide.?

The coin will be up for grabs at a rare coin and currency auction.?

Todd Imhof, executive vice president of Heritage, said the nickel is likely to attract lofty bids that only a handful of coins have achieved at auction. A 1933 double eagle, a $20 gold coin, holds the U.S. record: $8 million.?

Imhof expects the Walton nickel to generate some buzz.?

"This is a trophy item that sort of transcends the hobby," he said. "It's an interesting part of American history and there are collectors who look for something like this."?

Ryan Myers said he's not keen on selling the nickel.?

"First of all, it had been in the family for so long," he said. "It's not like something you found in a flea market or something you just found."?

Cheryl Myers said they're often asked why they held on to the coin for a decade after they learned it was authentic instead of immediately cashing it in.?

"It was righting a 40-year-old wrong," she wrote in an email. By allowing the American Numismatic Museum to display it for the past decade, it was honoring Walton's wishes.?

"It has been quite a ride," she said.?

Egypt's leader declares emergency after clashes kill dozens

CAIRO (Reuters) - Egyptian President Mohamed Mursi declared a month-long state of emergency in three cities along the Suez Canal where dozens of people have been killed over the past four days in protests his allies say are designed to overthrow him.

Seven people were shot dead and hundreds were injured in Port Said on Sunday during the funerals of 33 people killed there when locals angered by a court decision went on the rampage as anti-government protests spread around the country.

A total of 49 people have been killed since Thursday and Mursi's opponents, who accuse his Islamist Muslim Brotherhood of betraying the revolution that ousted long-time ruler Hosni Mubarak, have called for more demonstrations on Monday.

"Down, down Mursi, down down the regime that killed and tortured us!" people in Port Said chanted as the coffins of those killed on Saturday were carried through the streets.

Mursi, who was elected in June, is trying to fix a beleaguered economy and cool tempers before a parliamentary poll in the next few months which is supposed to cement Egypt's transition to democracy. Repeated eruptions of violence have weighed heavily on the Egyptian pound.

In a televised address, he said a nightly curfew would be introduced in Port Said, Ismailia and Suez, starting Monday.

Several hundred people protested in Ismailia, Suez and Port Said after the announcement, in which Mursi also called for a dialogue with top politicians. Activists in the three cities vowed to defy the curfew in protest at the decision.

"The protection of the nation is the responsibility of everyone. We will confront any threat to its security with force and firmness within the remit of the law," he said, offering condolences to families of the victims.

In Cairo the newly appointed Interior Minister Mohamed Ibrahim was ejected from the funeral of one of the police officers who died during Saturday's clashes in Port Said, according to witnesses and police sources.

A police officer at the funeral said many of his colleagues blame the interior minister for the deaths of at least two policemen during Saturday's clashes as he did not allow the police there to carry weapons and were only given teargas bombs.

SECURITY MEASURES

The violence has exposed a deep rift in the nation. Liberals and other opponents accuse Mursi of failing to deliver on economic promises and say he has not lived up to pledges to represent all Egyptians. His backers say the opposition is seeking to topple Egypt's first freely elected leader.

Distancing itself from the latest flare-ups, the opposition National Salvation Front said Mursi should have acted far sooner to impose extra security measures that would end the violence.

"Of course we feel the president is missing the real problem on the ground which is his own polices," spokesman Khaled Dawoud told Reuters. "His call to implement emergency law was an expected move given what is going on, namely thuggery and criminal actions."

The Front, formed late last year when Mursi provoked protests and violence by expanding his powers and driving through an Islamist-tinged constitution, has threatened to boycott the parliamentary poll and call for more protests if its demands are not met, including for an early presidential vote.

State television said seven people died from gunshot wounds in Port Said on Sunday. Port Said's head of hospitals, Abdel Rahman Farag, told Reuters more than 400 people had suffered from teargas inhalation, while 38 were wounded by gunshots.

Gunshots had killed many of the 33 who died on Saturday when residents rioted after a court sentenced 21 people, mostly from the Mediterranean port, to death for their role in deadly soccer violence at a stadium there last year.

A military source said many people in Port Said, which lies next to the increasingly lawless Sinai Peninsula, possess guns because they do not trust the authorities to protect them. However it was not clear who was behind the deaths and injuries.

In Cairo, police fired teargas at dozens at protesters throwing stones and petrol bombs in a fourth day of clashes over what demonstrators there and in other cities say is a power grab by Islamists two years after Mubarak was overthrown.

In Ismailia city, which lies on the Suez Canal between the cities of Suez and Port Said, police also fired teargas at protesters attacking a police station with petrol bombs and stones, according to witnesses and a security source there.

"KNEE-JERK REACTION"

Most of the deaths since Thursday were in Port Said and Suez, both cities where the army has now been deployed.

Heba Morayef of Human Rights Watch in Cairo said a state of emergency reintroduced laws that gave police sweeping powers of arrest "purely because (people) look suspicious".

"It is a classic knee-jerk reaction to think the emergency law will help bring security," she said. "It gives so much discretion to the Ministry of Interior that it ends up causing more abuse which in turn causes more anger."

The opposition Popular Current and other groups have called for more protests on Monday to mark what was one of the bloodiest days of the 2011 uprising.

Anti-Mursi protesters who have been camped out in Tahrir Square for weeks also demonstrated against Mursi's move to impose a state of emergency, reviving memories of Mubarak's era when emergency codes were in place for three decades and used to crush dissent and detain people without charge.

Protesters say Mursi has betrayed the revolution's aims.

"None of the revolution's goals have been realized," said Mohamed Sami, a protester in Cairo's Tahrir Square, the cauldron of the uprising that erupted on January 25, 2011 and toppled Mubarak 18 days later.

"Prices are going up. The blood of Egyptians is being spilt in the streets because of neglect and corruption and because the Muslim Brotherhood is ruling Egypt for their own interests."

Clashes also erupted in other streets near the square. The U.S. and British embassies, both close to Tahrir, said they were closed for public business on Sunday, normally a working day.

The army, Egypt's interim ruler until Mursi's election, was sent back onto the streets to restore order in Port Said and Suez, which both lie on the Suez canal. In Suez, at least eight people were killed in clashes with police.

Many ordinary Egyptians are frustrated by the violence that have hurt the economy and their livelihoods.

"They are not revolutionaries protesting," said taxi driver Kamal Hassan, 30, referring to those gathered in Tahrir. "They are thugs destroying the country."

Court rulings dim outlook for Guantanamo trials

(AP) ? A civilian appeals court has now reversed the verdicts of the only two Guantanamo Bay prisoners convicted in trials by military tribunal, casting a shadow over proceedings set to resume this week at the U.S. base in Cuba for the men accused in the Sept. 11 terrorist attack.

A federal appeals court on Friday threw out the military commission conviction of Ali Hamza al-Bahlul, who was charged with providing material support to terrorism and conspiracy for making propaganda videos for al-Qaida. That followed the dismissal in October of the conviction of Salim Hamdan, a driver for Osama bin Laden.

Al-Bahlul and Hamdan were the only prisoners convicted in a trial by the tribunals known as a military commission. The five other convictions of Guantanamo prisoners came through plea bargains.

There are two pending death penalty cases at Guantanamo: one against a prisoner accused of orchestrating the attack on the USS Cole in 2000, the other against five men accused of planning and aiding the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. But the recent reversals have raised new questions about the use of military commissions in complex terrorism cases.

"The fact that no conviction can stand up on appeal does not bode well for the military commission system," said James Connell, a lawyer for Ammar al-Baluchi, a Pakistani who is one of the five charged in the Sept. 11 attacks.

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit on Friday overturned al-Bahlul's November 2008 conviction. In October, the court overturned Hamdan's August 2008 conviction. In both cases, the reasoning was the same.

The court determined that before enactment of the Military Commissions Act of 2006, which authorized the tribunals for the terrorism suspects at Guantanamo, only violations of the international law of war and pre-existing federal offenses were subject to trial by military commission, a special court for wartime offenses. The court said the charges of material support for terrorism and conspiracy did not meet that standard.

The Justice Department let the deadline to appeal the Hamdan ruling expire, perhaps because he has already been released after serving his 5 ? year sentence and is back home in Yemen with his family. But the government said it disagreed with the ruling in court papers and is likely to challenge the al-Bahlul ruling.

A Pentagon spokesman, Army Lt. Col. Todd Breasseale, said "the al-Bahlul ruling has no bearing on the substantive merits," of the Sept. 11 case, which will be the subject of a four-day pretrial hearing scheduled to start Monday.

But the reversals hang like a cloud over the proceedings since the Sept. 11 case is vastly more complex than al-Bahlul or Hamdan, which were portrayed by officials at the time as warm-ups to the more significant prosecutions.

"It just shows just how shaky the entire military commission system is," said Andrea Prasow, an attorney for Human Rights Watch who was part of the defense team when Hamdan was convicted at Guantanamo in August 2008.

The cases couldn't be much more different. Hamdan was a relatively minor figure, dismissed as a "small player," even by the military judge who presided over his trial. Al-Bahlul, now serving life at Guantanamo, didn't even mount a defense.

The Sept. 11 case features five defendants facing the death penalty for charges that include nearly 3,000 counts of murder for their alleged roles in planning and helping orchestrate the worst terrorist attack on U.S. soil. Their May 5 arraignment was an unruly 13-hour spectacle, drawn out as the defendants refused to use the court translation system and ignored the judge, and any eventual conviction would face a multitude of appeals.

"Men's lives are on the line," Prasow said. "I think that's all the more reason for the government to proceed very cautiously and make sure that it is confident that it has a firm legal basis upon which to pursue these charges."

Already, the Hamdan and al-Bahlul cases are creating confusion in the Sept. 11 case.

The chief prosecutor for the Guantanamo tribunals, Army Brig. Gen. Mark Martins, sought to withdraw the charge of conspiracy in the Sept. 11 case, leaving seven charges against them.

"There are significant litigation risks attendant to proceeding with the joint conspiracy charge as a separate and stand-alone offense in the subject case," Martins said in a motion released Friday.

But then his recommendation to withdraw the charge was overruled by Convening Authority Bruce MacDonald, a retired admiral who oversees the military commissions, who said the conspiracy charge was still under judicial review.

The debate over the conspiracy charge won't be at issue at this week's hearing. A judge set the four-day proceeding at the base hear arguments on about two dozen defense and prosecution motions that must be resolved prior to a trial that is likely at least a year away.

Among the motions is one from lawyers for the five defendants, who include self-professed terrorist mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, requiring the U.S. government to preserve the secret overseas prisons where the men were held, and subjected to harsh interrogations, before they were taken to Guantanamo. Those prisons, they argue, are potential evidence for claims that the prisoners were subjected to torture.

Getting Around Green: Consider A Motorcycle - Green Living Ideas ...

Join GLI's 10,000 other followers on Twitter!

Our vehicles emit a lot of pollutants that are damaging for the environment, and the extent of pollution depends upon the type of vehicle.Cars are our everyday vehicles, but when it comes to a combination of fun and efficiency a motorcycle is the way to go! If you think you can handle a bike then you should go for it and if you just want to be a little greener here are some benefits of this vehicle:

Green advantages of motorcycles

1.?They emit less carbon dioxide

Motorcycles consume less fuel than cars, which means their production of carbon dioxide is also less. As the importance given to fuel efficiency and carbon dioxide emissions increases with time, motorcycles provide a greener option. They also take less space on the road, reducing the congestion and overall automobile emissions.

2. Leaner manufacturing and lower embodied energy

Motorcycles require fewer infrastructures to be manufactured compared to cars. The embodied energy of a motorcycle, just from its much smaller mass, is much lower than a car, all else being equal. In addition, if you consider the contribution of building separate lanes for motorcycles and cars, there?s a huge difference in production of greenhouse gases. If separate lanes are constructed for motorcycles as we have roads for cars, they would emit four times less greenhouse gases to maintain and build.

3.?Consume less rare earths

Rare earths are being consumed at a fast pace, and the demand is increasing from different industries, including automotive. The average Prius is carrying around about 10 pounds of lanthanum as part of the battery. A motorcycle uses little to none in manufacturing because battery powered bikes are not widely produced and gas powered bikes are so efficient.

4.?Manufacturers are using catalytic converters

Motorcycle manufacturers have realized the role they have to play for attaining a greener environment and are putting catalytic converters in the vehicle, which does a great job at reducing the pollution emitted. They prevent harmful elements from the motorcycle?s exhaust from being released into the air, and converts nitrogen oxide into nitrogen and oxygen before the release.Although these converters does not operate at 100% reduction they are pretty close and factor that into the already low-emission engines of motorcycles and you have a very green ride.

5.?They?ve smaller engines

The engine of any vehicle is its more prized asset, and as motorcycles have a smaller engine than other vehicles, it uses less energy and fuel. Engine parts on motorcycles are designed to be incredibly efficient because there is no space for wasted parts. From the carburetor to the o-ring a motorcycle engine can be viewed as the pinnacle of individual transportation efficiency.

6. They are awesome!?

A main reason why people own motorcycles is because they are awesome! Not only are they incredibly fun, but its hard not to look cool on a motorcycle too! The future of motorcycles could become even more green thanks to solar technology on bikes! Right now you can get a super fun and efficient bike but imagine having a solar powered personal transportation vehicle, the future is bright!

Apart from all the environmental benefits of considering a motorcycle, there are other advantages as well. They are more affordable in terms of traveling while spending less on fuel. Even existing car owners can take advantage of a motorcycle, keeping their cars for when they need more space, but using the bike for getting around, which will lead to increased savings and fun.

In wrongful-death lawsuit, Catholic hospital argues fetus is not a ...

CWN - January 24, 2013

A Catholic hospital in Colorado has argued in court that an unborn child should not be considered a ?person? for purposes of a wrongful-death lawsuit.

In the case of a woman who died of a heart attack while pregnant with twins, a lawyer for St. Thomas More hospital called the court?s attention to ?the long-standing rule in Colorado that the term ?person,? as it is used the Wrongful Death Act, encompasses only individuals born alive.? In the wrongful-death case, the plaintiff had argued that while the mother?s life could not have been saved, doctors should have intervened to save the unborn baby twins.

IRA Old Bailey bomber dies in Ireland

DUBLIN (Reuters) - Dolours Price, one of the Irish Republican Army (IRA) bombers convicted of the 1973 attack on London's Old Bailey and later a vocal critic of Sinn Fein leader Gerry Adams, died in her home in Dublin overnight, a family friend said on Thursday.

Price, along with her sister, served eight years of a life sentence for the car bombing outside the Old Bailey Central Criminal Court in London that wounded more than 200 people, part of an IRA campaign to try to force British forces from its province of Northern Ireland.

Price and her sister went on hunger strike in a British prison in a 200-day campaign to be moved to a jail in Northern Ireland. They were force fed and eventually repatriated to the province to serve their sentences.

The IRA disbanded after a 1998 peace deal that ended three decades of conflict between Catholic Irish nationalists seeking union with Ireland and Protestant loyalists determined to remain part of the United Kingdom. More than 3,000 people were killed.

In recent years, Price was caught up in a dispute over a confidential interview she gave to researchers from Boston College, one of dozens given by former fighters from the Northern Ireland conflict.

Interviewees were told their words, believed to give details of possible roles played by current political figures during the Northern Ireland conflict, including Sinn Fein President Gerry Adams, would remain sealed until their deaths.

Her death clears one obstacle for the release of the material she gave to the archive to police in Northern Ireland.

However, U.S. authorities would not immediately comment and Boston College said it was inappropriate to speculate on how her death would affect proceedings.

The researchers - journalist Ed Moloney and historian and ex-IRA member Anthony McIntyre - insisted the interviews would not be immediately handed over to police, describing Price as a friend and a valued participant in their project.

"The interviews are the subject of a stay imposed by the Supreme Court of the United States and that stay remains in place until that court, the highest in the land, decides otherwise," the pair said in a statement.

"There are other subpoenas outstanding and as far as we are concerned the same issues affect them as they did Dolours Price's case and we look forward to continuing the fight with renewed vigour to stop the remaining Belfast Project interviews from being handed over."

NOTHING TO FEAR

Exactly what Price may have said about Adams for the archive is unclear.

Another IRA figure interviewed for the archives, Brendan Hughes, died in 2008, paving the way for Boston College researchers to publish a book in which Hughes connected Adams to the 1972 death of Jean McConville.

The widowed mother of 10 was killed by the IRA on suspicion of being an informer.

The book was published in 2010, and that year Price also tied Adams to McConville's death in a newspaper interview.

The Boston College researchers to date have declined to discuss what Price may have told them for the archive project, however.

Adams, a member of Ireland's parliament, told reporters on Thursday he has nothing to fear from the college's material and offered his sympathy on Price's death.

Irish police, not naming Price, said they were investigating the sudden death of a woman in her 60s in Dublin late on Wednesday evening. They said there was no initial indication of foul play.

Price had two children and was once married to Hollywood actor Stephen Rea.

Apple announces Q1 2013 earnings: record $54.5 billion in revenue, 47.8 million iPhones and 22.9 million iPads sold

Apple announces Q1 2013 earnings

Yesterday was Google, tomorrow is Microsoft -- stuck in the middle? Apple. The unholy trinity of tech are going back-to-back-to-back with their quarterly earnings reports and Cupertino, faced with a steeply declining stock price, posted $54.5 billion in revenue -- just shy of Wall Street estimates. Still, that represents a record quarter for the company which has been rumored to be facing diminished demand for its flagship iPhone. While it may be a while 'til we know for sure if demand for the handset is tapering off, we can report that the 47.8 million iPhones sold in Q1 of 2013 represents a new high water mark. While revenues were a bit shy of estimates, the earnings per share of $13.82 were above what was expected, as was the record $13.08 billion in net profits. Year-over-year, profit was relatively flat ($13.06 billion in 2012), while revenues were up significantly from the $46.33 billion posted in Q1 of 2012.

Carrying the day were record sales of iPhones and iPads -- the latter of which sold 22.9 million units during the quarter, up from 15.4 million a year ago and 14 million last quarter. Other products, however, continued their slow decent towards potential obsolescence. Only 4.1 million Macs and 12.7 million iPods were shipped during the quarter, compared to 5.2 million and 15.4 million, respectively, the same time last year.

As usual, the vast majority of Apple's revenue, $20.3 billion to be exact, comes from the US. But other markets are growing quickly. In particular, revenues from China are up 67 percent year-over-year to 6.8 billion, while Japan and Asia Pacific are up 88 and 89 percent, respectively, just from last quarter.

Through all this Apple has continued to build an enormous war chest, with $196 billion in assets at its disposal. So, should the allure of its brushed aluminum lineup fade, the company should be able to carry on for some time before falling on dire straits. If you'd like to dig in to all the financial details check out the PR after the break and tune in here for updates when the earnings call gets under way at 5PM ET.

Update: The call is done and all the important tidbits are after the break.

Updates:

5:04PM Tim Cook just let us know that "well over half a billion iOS devices" have been sold as of the end of the quarter. That's a pretty decent jump from June's 400 million number.

5:12PM Peter Oppenheimer gave China a special shout out, where he says iPhone sales have doubled.

5:14PM Oppenheimer laid some of the blame for slow Mac sales on delays getting the 13-inch Retina MacBook Pro and iMac to market in some regions.

5:17PM iCloud usage appears to have skyrocketed, with Oppenheimer claiming 250 million accounts now active.

5:20PM Apparently over 75 million iOS devices were sold in this quarter alone. Not too shabby.

5:24PM Tim Cook says that, despite competitors going big, he feels no need to follow their lead. When it comes to smartphone screen sizes, Apple has "picked the right one" he says.

5:34PM Tim Cook admits that, while the short ramp up time for shipping new iMacs may have hurt sales for the quarter, he's sure there "has been some cannibalization" from the iPad.

5:46PM Apple TV, the perpetual Cupertino hobby, is apparently doing quite well, with 2 million units being sold in the quarter -- a jump of 60 percent year-over-year according to Tim Cook.

5:54PM Tim Cook doesn't see cannibalization as a problem necessarily, but as a "huge opportunity." As he explained, if they held back on the iPad due to fear of cannibalizing Mac sales another company would simply come along, fill that niche and eat into Apple's bottom line anyway.

6:02PM Cook just sneaked in a mention that 36 new carriers with LTE will be adding the iPhone 5 next week, including those in countries like Italy, Denmark, and Switzerland.

6:05PM That's all folks, thanks for tuning in.

Debt limit extension bill passes House

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The House of Representatives on Wednesday passed a Republican plan to allow the federal government to keep borrowing money through mid-May, clearing it for fast enactment after the top Senate Democrat and White House endorsed it.

The vote in the Republican-controlled House was 285-144, with no votes coming from 33 Republicans and 111 Democrats.

The measure avoids for the time being a repeat of the 2011 debt ceiling standoff that rattled markets and resulted in a downgrade of the government's triple-A credit rating. The Treasury is expected to exhaust remaining capacity under the $16.4 trillion debt limit between mid-February and early March.

The House vote marked a sharp departure from Republican vows to use the debt ceiling issue as a way to extract spending cuts from President Barack Obama.

But House Speaker John Boehner warned immediately after Wednesday's vote that Republicans would take the next opportunity - automatic budget cuts set for March - to demand "reforms" from Obama.

The automatic cuts, which were temporarily set aside earlier this month in a fiscal deal between the White House and Congress, are "going to go into effect" unless Obama makes concessions, Boehner said.

The bill aims to draw Senate Democrats into the debate by requiring both chambers to pass a formal budget resolution by April 15. If either the House or Senate fails to meet this deadline, lawmakers' pay is suspended until they pass a budget.

Republicans have named the bill the "No Budget, No Pay Act of 2013."

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said the Democratic-controlled Senate would take up the bill and pass it without changes. He and other top Senate Democrats praised the Republican plan for not requiring spending cuts to match the increase in borrowing authority.

Both Reid and President Barack Obama have called for a "clean" debt limit increase. The White House said on Tuesday that Obama would not stand in the way of the bill if it was passed by Congress.

"This proposal gives us something we can work with here in the Senate," added Senator Charles Schumer, a New York Democrat.

Republicans backed the bill in the face of polls showing Americans blaming them, rather than Democrats, for the uncertainty surrounding the so-called "fiscal cliff" that was resolved around New Year's Day by raising taxes on the wealthy.

House Democrats who voted against the bill complained that it was a politically motivated gimmick that created a new "fiscal cliff" in the spring.

BREATHING SPACE

The bill avoids an immediate threat of U.S. default by suspending limits on the government's ability to borrow until May 19. It does not specify a dollar amount for debt ceiling increase, but allows borrowing as needed to meet federal obligations that must be paid by that date.

Congress would then have to agree on a new, longer-term debt ceiling increase around that time - a deal that would not likely come without a more comprehensive deficit reduction plan.

Boehner, who unveiled the short term extension plan last week, said he and fellow House Republicans were committed to passing a budget that would be balanced in 10 years.

According to budget experts, achieving such a goal, especially in the absence of additional tax hikes, would require massive cuts in federal spending beyond any envisioned in previous Republican-backed budgets or in the deficit-reduction plans of panels such as the bi-partisan Bowles-Simpson commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform.

The government is currently on track for its fifth straight fiscal year with a deficit exceeding $1 trillion - a trajectory widely viewed as eventually leading to a debt downgrade.

"My goodness, we ought to be able to balance the budget over the next 10 years," Boehner said on the House floor.

House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan, who was the Republican vice presidential nominee in the 2012 election, said the measure was aimed at prompting a robust debate in Congress over how to achieve a more sustainable fiscal path.

"We see this as a very defining moment for this session of Congress and our caucus on getting a down payment on the debt crisis, on averting it," Ryan said at a media breakfast sponsored by the Wall Street Journal.

But House Democrats objected, saying it was irresponsible to set short-term debt limit deadlines that would keep a cloud of uncertainty hanging over financial markets and cause volatility and higher interest rates.

"This legislation sets up another fiscal cliff, another financial nightmare, another problem for the American people that we should avoid," said Representative Rob Andrews, a Democrat from New Jersey.

Representative Sander Levin, the senior Democrat on the tax-writing Ways and Means Committee, told reporters: "We should not continue to have this sword of default over the heads of Congress and the American economy."

SEQUESTER SHOWDOWN

The vote shifted the budget debate to the March 1 start of automatic spending cuts for military and domestic programs, and the March 27 expiration of funding needed to keep federal agencies operating.

Ryan said he believed that the automatic cuts, known as a sequester, would likely proceed without changes, because no alternatives have been advanced by Senate Democrats or the Obama administration.

The House last year passed two bills to replace the sequester cuts for fiscal 2013, sparing any reductions for military programs, while shifting more of the cuts onto many domestic programs aimed at aiding the poor, including the Medicaid healthcare program and social services block grants.

After the "fiscal cliff" deal, signed by Obama on January 2, raised taxes on the wealthy and delayed the start of automatic cuts, Congress faces about $85 billion in cuts for the remainder of fiscal 2013, which ends on April 14.

The budget plans that the legislation aims to enforce would set discretionary spending levels for fiscal 2014, which starts on October 1.
