Zimbabwe leader Mugabe receiving prostate cancer treatment

A number of international media outlets are reporting that Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe, widely regarded by many Western governments as one of the most notorious rulers of the last several decades, is in Singapore receiving unspecified treatment for prostate cancer.

Mugabe is believed to be making his seventh trip to Singapore. Officially, the head of the country is in Singapore for other, lesser health reasons.

The ruler rose to power in then-Rhodesia during the 1960sand 1970s, when he was considered a rebel leader against white minority rule. With his election to power in 1980 began the independence of the country, renamed as Zimbabwe, where the well-educated leader has served in a variety of positions of power and diplomacy, though none quite with the influence that he has held since becoming the country's President in 1987.

Word of Mugabe's prostate cancer first surfaced thanks to the website Wikileaks, back in 2008. It was that same year that Mugabe was quoted by Time Magazine as saying, "Only God who appointed me will remove me."

At age 87, Mugabe has outlived the average life expectancy of his constituency by half a century.
