Nevada moves caucus to Feb. 4 after backlash (AP)

MANCHESTER, N.H. ? Nevada Republicans have shifted their presidential caucuses to early February, a move that ends an increasingly bitter standoff among rival states and for the first time clarifies the path to the Republican presidential nomination.

There will be no voting before Christmas. That's despite warnings from New Hampshire's top election official that Nevada's initial insistence to host its contest in mid-January could force the Granite State to schedule the nation's first Republican primary election in roughly six weeks.

But facing boycott threats from campaigns, incentive offers from the Republican National Committee, and the private blessing of the Mitt Romney campaign, Nevada Republicans voted Saturday to set their caucuses for Feb. 4. It will be the West's first stop in the race for the Republican presidential nomination and the fifth contest overall, after Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina and Florida.

"The candidates are anxious to come here and campaign and don't want to have the heat put on them by New Hampshire to stay away," former Nevada Gov. Bob List, a national Republican committeeman, said before Saturday's vote. "We have to eat a little crow perhaps in some people's minds, but I think in the end it's a win-win."

The calendar scramble had consumed Republican officials in early voting states and complicated candidates' decisions about travel, the timing of television advertisements and the distribution of limited resources. But with New Hampshire now free to settle on its preferred date of Jan. 10, the final puzzle pieces appear to have fallen into place.

Iowa will keep its Jan. 3 caucus date despite Nevada's move, Iowa GOP chairman Matt Strawn said Saturday.

The Republican presidential contenders are free to shift their campaigns into high gear with the first stop on the road to the GOP nomination set for Iowa in just 10 weeks.

"Now you'll see the campaigns ramp up very quickly," said Michael Dennehy, a New Hampshire Republican operative who led Sen. John McCain's political operation four years ago and was a central player in the Granite State's boycott push in recent weeks.

Nevada's shift ensures the state won't suffer penalties expected for states that violated national party rules by skipping ahead to boost their political influence. Nevada Republicans also stand to earn some perks at the party's national convention in Florida next August. As part of negotiations in recent days, the Republican National Committee promised Nevada delegates they could sit on the floor "in the best positions," and would have prime hotel space if they made the change, according to Nevada GOP Chairwoman Amy Tarkanian.

"This will be well worth it," she said. "We will be the good guys in the end because we don't need to be New Hampshire's pinata."

Republican Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval endorsed the move, saying it would allow the state GOP to focus on its principal goal ? winning elections.

"The move preserves Nevada's first-in-the-West standing and creates a scenario where all candidates will likely compete here," he said in a statement.

The RNC would not comment on its specific role in the discussions, but Chairman Reince Priebus, who had called for a compromise, praised Nevada's decision.

"Nevadans should be proud of their Republican leaders," he said. "They have restored their state's key role in the nomination process and in the 2012 presidential election."

The Romney campaign also played an active, but private, role in the flap.

Campaign officials initially encouraged Nevada to schedule its caucuses before Florida, hoping that Romney's popularity in Nevada would fuel a victory there and create momentum heading into the critical Florida contest. But sensing a political backlash in New Hampshire, Romney representatives in recent days encouraged key Nevada Republicans to settle on a later date.

The Romney campaign would not discuss its actions publicly when asked Saturday, but did not dispute its role.

New Hampshire officials were clearly happy.

"It's a win for the process and it's certainly a win for New Hampshire," said Phyllis Woods, a RNC member from the Granite State. "Going forward, we really want to have Nevada as an ally. We really don't want to have enemies as we go into the next primary calendar."

Also Saturday, Nevada Democrats said they would hold their caucuses on Jan. 21.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, who helped obtain the state's third-in-the nation status in 2008, decried the GOP's move.

"I'm deeply disappointed that the Nevada Republican Party has caved to the will of the Republican National Committee and New Hampshire," he said in a statement.

Geologist Mark McMenamin has invoked the mythical creature from Norse mythology as an outside-the-box explanation for a puzzling assembly of marine fossils in a state park in Nevada. These fossils could actually be a carefully patterned refuse pile left by an enormous, tentacled creature, he says ? a creature he dubs a kraken.

The problem, other researchers say, is that neither Nevada's Berlin-Ichthyosaur State Park, nor any other, similar fossil assemblage around the world has yielded any direct or indirect fossil evidence of a "kraken" ? let alone any 200-million to 250-million year old creature capable of arranging its dinner scraps in a pattern.

Dr. McMenamin, who teaches at Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, Mass., presented his proposal at a Geological Society of America conference in Minneapolis on Monday. He came with flak jacket in tow.

"We're ready for this. We have a very good case," he said.

The period this proposed creature would have populated has long fascinated scientists. Known as the Triassic Period, it lasted roughly 50 million years. It began at the end of the planet's largest mass extinction some 251 million years ago. Researchers estimate that some 96 percent of all marine species and 70 percent of land-based creatures vanished. It ended in another mass extinction, one that would lead to the rise of the dinosarus.

The Triassic "is a time when modern ecosystems come into being," says Hans-Dieter Sues, curator of vertebrate paleontology at the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History. "Almost every group that today is dominant in the world's oceans or on land had either its first appearance in the Triassic or some of its closest relatives first showed up."

One of the period's iconic creatures: large sharp-toothed fish known as ichthyosaurs. One member in particular, Shonisaurus popularis, grew to lengths of up to 50 feet. Nevada's Berlin-Ichthyosaur State Park boasts nine fossils of these giants, all bunched in the same general location.

At issue is whether the assembly represents animals who died in a shallow ocean from a mass stranding or an explosive algae bloom, or whether the formation was in the deep sea. Some recent geological analysis has suggested the deep-sea location ? the modern-day battleground for sperm whales and their prey, giant squid.

Enter McMenamin and the kraken. A unique pattern of vertebra caught his attention ? two rows, neatly set side by side in a manner that make them look nested. Moreover, the bones were scarred in ways that indicated the animals died at different times.

Marine scientists have long noted that octopuses gather up bones, rocks, remains of prey, literally anything they can grab in order to hide the entrances to their dens.

Sprint faces cash burn, investors flee (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? Sprint Nextel Corp signaled that it could spend more money than it brings in over the next few years, even without accounting for the high costs of selling the Apple Inc iPhone, sending its shares down 13 percent.

The No. 3 U.S. mobile phone service, which outlined a plan to spend $7 billion on a network upgrade, refused to address the cost of selling Apple Inc's iPhone in presentations at an investor conference on Friday.

Sprint said it would pay for the network upgrade with cash from its balance sheet and by raising capital. It did not provide details.

"They're going to be spending more money than they're bringing in for the next couple of years... even before iPhone costs," Hudson Square analyst Todd Rethemeier said.

Sprint also faced analyst questions about its liquidity expectations while it invests in the network.

Analysts also asked several times about its plans for wireless telecommunications network operator Clearwire, which is majority owned by Sprint.

Some asked if it would let Clearwire go bankrupt. Chief Executive Dan Hesse said that if it does go bankrupt, Sprint would expect to be part of the process.

Clearwire shares fell 32 percent to $1.39. The shares started to fall after Sprint said that it hopes to use spectrum from Clearwire rival LightSquared to bolster its network capacity.

Joan Lappin of Gramercy Capital Management angrily asked executives why Sprint was committing to spend billions of dollars on upgrading its network while Clearwire, which has much more spectrum than Sprint, faces a massive shortfall in funding.

The question was followed by loud clapping and cheering among the analyst and investor attendees.

Sprint, whose shares fell to $2.63, started taking orders for the iPhone on Friday. It said the phone would be more expensive than others.

Hesse also said the device would be "quite accretive" to its profits over time.

Sprint said it plans to upgrade its high-speed wireless services network faster than it previously expected, leading analysts to question how the company would pay for the upgrade along with its commitment to carry the iPhone.

"Seeing all these balls in the air is a little scary," said Evercore analyst Jonathan Schildkraut.

LightSquared, which is backed by hedge fund manager Phil Falcone, needs regulatory approval to build a network using the spectrum Sprint hopes to use.

Sprint said it will launch its high-speed service by the middle of 2012 and expects to complete its upgrade by the end of 2013. It had talked about a five-year plan for upgrading its network when it first discussed the project in December.

The company still expects its network upgrade to save about $11 billion, mostly through closing its older iDen network.

Sprint said its network upgrade would help boost its margin from operating income before depreciation and amortization by 4 percent to 6 percent from current levels by 2014.

It promised another parallel 4 to 6 percent boost in margins from improving its core operations in the same timeframe.

But analysts questioned whether investors would see any boost in profitability because of the steep spending plans.

Bernstein Research analyst Craig Moffett worried that Sprint could have problems with its service while it sets aside spectrum for the network upgrade.

It is not clear how the company would avoid "creating a capacity gap" when there will be big demands on the network, he said, particularly from users of the iPhone.

Sprint plans to upgrade its network using Long Term Evolution, the same high-speed wireless technology used by its two bigger rivals, AT&T Inc and Verizon Wireless, a venture of Verizon Communications Inc and Vodafone Group Plc.

But he believes Ireland's cultural riches -- its poets, writers, musicians and actors -- are an important calling card for companies seeking a foot in the door overseas.

"I think artists lay out the carpet before businessmen, whether businessmen like to admit it or not," he said, speaking in the courtyard of Dublin Castle.

"You can't quantify the benefit of culture and art and drama and education in harsh, cold economic terms but in the long term there is no question about it whatsoever."

"Without Yeats, Synge, O'Casey, Joyce, Heaney and U2, the profile of Ireland would be much, much poorer without those people."

Since his appointment, which he combines with his "day job" as an actor, Byrne has curated the first Irish exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

BOSTON ? Terry Francona met with Boston Red Sox management on Friday to discuss his future as manager. Shortly after the meeting, Francona, owner John Henry, and chairman Tom Werner left in separate cars. Francona left first, at 11:55 a.m. No announcement was made.

At 1:25 p.m., general manager Theo Epstein released a statement.

"John Henry, Tom Werner, Larry Lucchino, Ben Cherington and I met with Terry Francona this morning at Fenway Park to exchange thoughts and information on the 2011 season and discuss areas for improvement going forward," he said. "We all plan on taking some time to process the thoughts expressed in the meeting. There are no immediate plans for an announcement."

At 1:29 p.m., surprisingly, Francona pulled back into Fenway in his Cadillac Escalade, before departing again at 2:09 p.m.

As he drove away, a fan on the street clapped and then gave him the thumbs-up sign.

Several media reports Friday said Francona would not return for a ninth season. He led the Red Sox to World Series titles in 2004, their first since 1918, and 2007.

The team has 10 days from the end of its season to decide whether to retain the manager, whose contract has two option years at the club's discretion. Boston missed the playoffs despite leading the AL wild-card race by nine games on Sept. 4. It went 6-18 after that, ending with a 4-3 loss Wednesday night to the Baltimore Orioles.

At a news conference Thursday, Francona said he and general manager Theo Epstein had approached the topic of the option, but declined to comment on his future.
