Scott Sonnon ? Blog Archive ? Obesity: Beauty, Worth vs Health and ...

May 30, 2012 ? 9:58 am

Eleanor Roosevelt said, ?Great minds discuss ideas, average minds discuss events, small minds discuss people.? Let?s seek to use our minds greatly, and discuss some ideas for a moment.

As someone who overcame childhood obesity, without yo-yo backsliding, I intimately can relate that these are some of the strongest emotions in the world surrounding nutrition, exercise and body image.

Obesity has become a bug-bear designation, fraught with sensitive, reactive ego. When we recover from obesity, or food sensitivities (like gluten) and substance addictions (like sugar), an enormous chemical storm assails our mind with the ?molecules of emotion? (ibid Candace Pert). This gives rise to a cacophony of self-deprecating judgements, which we often outwardly projected upon others. [Disease and illness of any kind can cause this catastrophizing filter judging ourselves and others.]

So, let?s distinguish between:

  • preferential judgement (what you consider beautiful and worthy) and
  • professional assessment (what has been scientifically evaluated and you have been occupationally educated to measure.)

What I ?prefer? for myself has ZERO place in another individual?s personal preferences. And when I am approached for my professional services, I feel it a duty to remain nonjudgmental in any assessments I am asked to conduct. I believe in carrying that professionalism throughout my life.

We can be very attached to being alive (quantity of life) and having a great (quality of) life? and so we can inadvertently slip health and fitness into criteria for beauty and character. This causes us personal suffering and viscous judgement toward and from others. However:

  • Beauty and worth are subjective and unmeasurable. You are beautiful and worthy by divine creation.
  • Health and fitness are objective and measurable. You are healthy and fit depending upon your transitory behaviors and attitudes.

For example in the following image, some people have been judging her on the beauty and desirability (worth). She wanted to become fitter and healthier, and then she did. She did this because she loved herself from before to after. Unfortunately, many consumed by their own issues, project self-loathing upon her, presume social pressures coerced her into a deprecated behavior, and mutated her into some pre-fabricated definition of beauty. Her health and fitness, as is evidenced by that gorgeous smile BEFORE AND AFTER, is merely a byproduct of her choosing to make changes, but her beauty and worth as a person are constant and inviolate.

If you are less healthy and less fit, that doesn?t mean that you?re less beautiful and less worthy. Nor when you?re healthier and fitter are you more beautiful and more worthy. Keeping firm on this distinction will expedite the ability to improve quality of life (fitness) and not lessen quantity (health). But it will also prevent the confusion between preferential judgment and professional assessment, and allow people to offer us valuable information without any emotional reaction to their feedback.

Self-love, not self-loathing, gateways positive transformation in body, mind and spirit. ?The secret of change is to focus all of your energy, not on fighting the old, but on building the new.? ~ Socrates

Chris Hayes, MSNBC Commentator, Questions "Hero" Designation for Military Members

Chris Hayes, a political commentator on MSNBC, has created quite a stir - on Memorial Day of all days - for remarks he made yesterday in regard to the designation of military personnel as "heroes."

The journalist said he feels "uncomfortable" throwing that word about because it is "so rhetorically proximate to justifications for more war." In other words: How can we refer to someone as heroic if we disagree with the cause for which he or she died?

It certainly seems like an odd way to make a point about war. Surely we can differentiate between policy and the troops carrying out that policy in the name of a country they love, can't we? Watch the clip and form your own opinion.

Should Chris Hayes apologize for these comments?

Are you wondering about the benefits of PPC advertising? There are numerous ways in which PPC marketing can be helpful in making money online.

Due to the increasing importance of online advertising, the Pay Per Click (PPC) advertising networks are growing in number. Google Adwords is the most popular ppc system for both advertisers and affiliates.

Yahoo Marketing offers a good alternative to Google and it can be lower in cost dependant upon the specific niche market your business is in. Bing is owned by Microsoft.

PayPerClickAcademy.com is a web site that offers an in depth look into ppc advertising. They provide assistance with finding affiliate offers to promote along with a good introduction to pay per click marketing for newbies.

Let?s look a little more into detail on PPC advertising.

Pay Per Click (PPC) advertising will pay the publishers once the visitors click on the ads. On the other hand, the advertisers benefit from it once they make a sale.

Therefore, for both the publishers and the advertisers, the PPC ads really are a key method to obtain online income. The visitors and the advertising networks also form a very important part of the PPC advertising world. Advertising can?t be positioned without the marketing networks and it cannot be seen without actual visitors.

Advantages of Pay Per Click Ads

The publisher is paid per click once the website visitors click on the ads which are posted on their website or blog. You can have just one single blog or several blogs for placing the ads.

The advertisers look for a legitimate web site where their advertisements will be shown. Because of this, the PPC advertising networks form a platform between the advertisers and publishers so that all are able to do business online.

1. With regard to Publishers: Pay Per Click is a beneficial way of making money because the visitors click the ads searching for information. More traffic results in more money from the ads. Also, the cost per click varies as per the keywords and the website with higher quality content generates a great income for that publisher.

2. With regard to Advertisers: Advertisers constantly need to promote their products on a associated web site to ensure that their products reach worldwide. That results in more sales making more profit for them. The price of the advertising is not that high since the advertisers can easily earn profits when their products are purchased.

3. For Advertising Networks: Advertising networks benefit from their business because they obtain good income from the advertisers.

Moreover, they can earn more from other sorts of advertising with their websites. In short, the advertising networks also have a website that becomes a very important platform for online advertising.

4. For Visitors: Those that click the PPC ads are forwarded to the website where they can buy the genuine products.

Some websites sell excellent products and some websites are only for advertising to achieve popularity. Finally, the visitor benefits after buying the product in the comfort of their home.

Online Business While We Snooze

Altogether, when we see the world of Online marketing, it is completely surviving on the basis of online advertising. No matter what, new websites are being created by the publishers so that the PPC advertising makes a good income for them even while they sleep.

The publishers put the ads on their blogs just once and the advertisers create the adverts only once. Both of them can relax and benefit even when they?re fast asleep.

The online advertising has many benefits; however, it also needs great consistency. A publisher remains constant while developing a blog and the advertiser remains consistent until the profit is made. Overall the benefits of the PPC advertising are amazing for everyone at all levels.

(AP) ? An explosion ripped through a building full of small shops in downtown Nairobi on Monday, injuring at least 28 people, including a woman who blamed the blast on a "bearded man" who left behind a bag shortly before the detonation.

Police officials first indicated the explosion could have been caused by some sort of electrical malfunction but the prime minister said it was deliberate. Al-Shabab ? an Islamist militant group from Somalia ? has threatened to carry out such an attack.

"This is a heinous act," Prime Minister Raila Odinga said while visiting the scene of the blast. "They want to scare us but we will not be scared."

The explosion sent dark smoke billowing out of a one-story building on Moi Avenue, named after Kenya's second president. The blast peeled back the front corner of the building's aluminum roof, shattered windows in the building and scattered shoes, clothes and other wares on the ground. A high-rise building with a glass exterior next door was largely untouched.

Speaking to The Associated Press from a Nairobi hospital bed, Irene Wachira said a bearded man came to a nearby stall three times and acted as if he were interested in buying something. Wachira said the third time he came with a bag that he left behind. The blast occurred shortly afterward, she said.

Wachira, a vendor in the building, described the man as "Arabic-looking" because of his relatively light skin. A doctor told AP that another person wounded in the blast said a Somali-looking man left behind the bag. The doctor said he could not be quoted by name.

Police officials who first responded hesitated to blame terrorism, given the lack of shrapnel. Kenya Power ruled out an electrical fault as the cause. The national electricity agency said the building had no ground-mounted transformer that would explode and determined that all electrical connections to the building that would blow in a short circuit remained intact.

After the explosion, bloodied people received medical care on the street as authorities tried to usher hundreds of people away. The scene was played out just a few blocks from where the U.S. Embassy had been destroyed by a truck bomb in 1998. Al-Qaida's near-simultaneous attacks on the U.S. embassies in Nairobi and Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, killed 224 people.

Odinga said security would be improved downtown and that the Somali militants, who are linked to al-Qaida, "want to scare investors. They want to scare tourists."

"We condemn the terrorists and tell them their days are numbered," said Odinga, who is expected to run for president in next year's election.

Al-Shabab threaten to carry out large-scale attacks here followed Kenya's decision last October to send troops into Somalia to pursue the Islamist militants. Kenya said back then that it was sending in the troops as a response to kidnappings on Kenyan soil last year blamed on al-Shabab. The kidnappings caused tourism in Kenya to plummet, especially around the coastal resort of Lamu.

Since October, a series of grenade attacks has rocked Kenya. The latest happened Saturday night in the sprawling Dadaab refugee camp near the Somali border. Six people were injured in two simultaneous grenades blasts, officials said.

A hospital official said that at least 28 people were wounded in Monday's explosion, including four with serious injuries such as burns, fractures and deep lacerations. None of the victims suffered shrapnel wounds, said Thomas Mutie, the acting chief executive at Kenyatta National Hospital.

Union Budget 2012 for real estate

First, the nice news. Permitting External Commercial Borrowing (ECB) for reasonable housing interprets into availability of capital for developers that specialize in low-cost housing.

This section of housing is characterised by low margins and it becomes engaging as long as developers are enabled to provide larger volumes. Higher capital availability can facilitate in timely project execution, which can end in higher volumes.

Affordable property in Bangalore has been stressed upon within the Budget. The allowance of ECB for lowcost reasonableresidential property in Bangalorecan lower interest value for developers. So as to ease liquidity, the govt. has additionally reduced withholding tax on ECBs for reasonable housing from twenty percent to five percent for three years. Besides, one percent interest rate subsidy provided last year for loans towards reasonable housing continues this year.

Another excellent news is that the exemption of proceeds from the sale of a residential property in Bangalorefrom capital gains tax if it's invested in equity or equipment of an SME ? earlier the sole route for exemption was purchase of another property or tax saving bonds. However, with additional reinvestment choices, developers worry this might even end in a lowering of sales volumes within the secondary sale market. The exemption of capital gains tax to speculate in SMEs ?may end in money flows out of real estate?.

The country desires infrastructure growth and also the Budget has not disappointed on this front yet. MD of RICS South Asia, Mr. Sachin Sandhir has given a statement, ?The ripetizione of allotment in infrastructure debt fund through allocation to NHDP, IIFCL, NHB and SIDBI including full exemption from basic customs duty for equipment for road and highways construction are seemingly to spice up the sectors of infrastructure and construction. Further, measures like credit guarantee and direct transfer of subsidy is probably going to vary the expansion setting. One year extension of sun-set clause on tax incentives for infrastructure projects underneath eighty IA is additionally a welcome step.?

However, the unhealthy news comes within the name of increase in service tax. Increase of service tax could be a damper and developers bemoan that everyone the positives are going to be nullified by this step. The rise within the service tax rate from 100% to 12% system is probably going to extend the value of production for developers, who are already reeling underneath high input prices. It follows that this increased burden are going to be passed on to end users. With the rise in excise duty, the value of basic inputs like furnishings, cement and steel etc will go up.

Navin M Raheja, the president of NAREDCO and CMD of Raheja Developers Ltd, says that this may make housing units costlier. ?Real Estate Industry was expecting some relief from service tax. With the price increase the value of construction can increase by approx by 0.5%.?

A significant a part of sale worth of a home consists of varied taxes like excise, VAT, service tax and the stamp duty. Increase within the service tax goes to any increase (marginally) the burden on the homebuyers of mid- and high-segment (housing units costing quite rupees twenty five lakh). This may roughly translate into Rs 40000 on home costing rupees seventy five lakh. The silver lining is that the reasonable housing being a part of negative list is exempted from service tax.

?No genuine? efforts are being created to encourage cheap housing, like bringing cheap housing beneath priority lending, according tax rebate beneath Section 80 IB (10) and also the few positives are simply a decision making in last minutes. This is, in regard, to the expansion of interest subsidy of one percent on housing loans by extending it to housing loan up to rupees fifteen lakh where the price of the house doesn't exceed rupees twenty five lakh.

Developers feel that this announcement is unlikely to own any major impact on demand across major Tier one cities like Mumbai, the NCR, Bangalore etc, whereas owning to the prevalent high property costs. However, affordable-housing phase in Tier two and Tier three cities might get pleasure from this concession.

Former Franklin County manager charged by Washington Attorney General's Office

The Washington Attorney General's Office filed charges Friday against a former Franklin County manager accused of stealing at least $1.8 million from the county to support his gambling and $100-a-day cocaine habit.

Dennis M. Huston of Pasco is charged in Franklin County Superior Court with first-degree theft, money laundering and possessing cocaine.

State prosecutors say Huston, 65, fraudulently submitted invoices and payment requests for Critzer Equipment Co., then deposited the money into a company bank account between March 1990 and February 2012.

Franklin County officials suspect Huston stole another $1 million during that period, but Janelle Guthrie, the attorney general's communications director, said the state can't prove Huston had the money sent to Critzer Equipment before the company closed in November 2001.

Investigators allege that after the legitimate Spokane company folded, Huston continued to use the company's name to steal county money for vehicles parts never delivered.

The state claims he was stealing from $123,000 to $220,000 a year between 2002 and 2011 while he was the county's public works accounting and administrative director.

The invoices ranging from $4,000 to $9,000 were for various equipment parts, and typically two to three payments were made each month, documents said.

The alleged embezzlement was discovered earlier this year by the Franklin County Auditor's Office when employees were checking vendors.

When another check came through for approval at the end of January, Huston was caught on a surveillance video making a deposit at the bank with the Critzer Equipment business account.

Huston initially was arrested Feb. 2, but then was released while county and state officials investigated the theft allegations. He then was fired by county commissioners.

Huston could not be reached by phone Friday at his home. He remains out of jail and is scheduled to enter a plea June 12. Assistant Attorney General Scott Marlow will prosecute the case.

"There is no concern that he is a flight risk," Guthrie said, noting he is still in the Pasco area after being released from jail Feb. 7.

Court documents filed Friday allege Huston told Pasco police officers that he had been submitting false invoice vouchers for Critzer Equipment since 1990, less than a year after he was hired by the county.

He was hired as a public works accountant in May 1989, less than eight months after he finished serving 21 months in federal custody for embezzling taxpayer money by using a fake company when he was a finance officer with a federal agency in Montana. At that time, he said he had a drug problem.

In the Franklin County case, court documents allege Huston admitted to creating the Critzer vouchers and forging the initials of others to falsely indicate the voucher had been reviewed, the part received and placed in inventory, according to court documents.

Huston told police he created invoices for Critzer on his county computer and set up passwords needed to access the invoices, according to documents.

Huston told the officers he used the money from the Critzer bank account to buy cocaine and gamble at a local casino, according to court documents.

He also told investigators that he used the money to pay personal bills and make credit card payments.

When he was arrested, he had cocaine, as well as a debit card, blank check and a checkbook for Critzer Equipment, according to court documents.

The state AG's office began investigating about four months ago at the request of the Franklin County prosecutor.

Prosecutor Shawn Sant said he asked the AG's office to handle the case to avoid a conflict of interest.

"I'm glad that they have finally been able to finish up their investigation sufficiently to file charges," Sant said Friday.

He said he believes the charges are appropriate.

Guthrie said that although Huston told police about his involvement in the thefts, officials still needed to conduct a thorough investigation to make sure that there was nothing else that needed to be included in the case.

She said while that investigation is not completed, prosecutors felt they had enough information to charge Huston.

Investigators also had to look into the potential involvement of other county employees, including two of Huston's children who also work for the county. The state prosecutor has determined that Huston was the only one involved in the alleged theft, she said.

The charges of first-degree theft and money laundering are class B felonies with a maximum penalty of 10 years imprisonment and a $20,000 fine plus restitution. Possessing cocaine is a class C felony with a maximum penalty of five years imprisonment and a $10,000 fine plus restitution.

Also, Franklin County has sued Huston and his wife for the $2.8 million he allegedly stole.

The Top 5 Components of a Smart Investing System

Do you make these 5 investing mistakes? So many people make one or more of them, which can suck the profits right out of their account. These mistakes aren?t commonly known ? but they steal profits just the same.

Even worse, sometimes it seems like the entire investment industry is out to force people to make these mistakes ? because the mistakes you make can make a lot of money for brokers and advisors.

The good news is that these mistakes can be avoided with just a bit of effort. Below are the top 5 investment mistakes that you can easily avoid:

#1: ?All In?

When someone calls out ?All In? during Texas Hold-em, it?s exciting. They could win everything. But what makes it so exciting is the risk of losing it all. Going ?All In? can end the game in just a few seconds.

Going ?All In? is not something you want to do with your money. It?s too risky. Sadly, 90%+ of investors do go ?All In? by placing a majority of their money in the U.S. stock market. This guarantees them a high level of risk and inconsistent profits.

The returns of the U.S. stock market over the last 15 years has been extremely volatile ? and most people hate the surprise losses in their account which seem to happen with alarming frequency.

Don?t go ?All In? with your account. Invest in other markets like commodities, bonds, and foreign markets.

#2: Lack of Focus

This is the flip side of the ?All In? mistake. Having too many investments is?almost as bad?for your account as going ?All In?.

It seems safer to have many different investments, but it?s not really safe at all. An account with too many investments ends up imitating the returns of the stock market, which as we know, can be extremely risky.

Say a person buys a small cap mutual fund, a large cap mutual fund and then a bit of a value fund, plus a little bit of a tech fund thinking they are ?diversifying.? It turns out a portfolio like this is almost exactly the same as just buying the S&P 500.

Once a portfolio gets beyond a medium level of diversification, it quickly becomes riskier.

And brokers do not make this easy to figure out since in most cases they make their money per trade, so they actually encourage you to trade more despite the fact that you will probably lose more by doing so.

To beat the market as an investor, you?ll need to be different than the market. It?s a fine line between going ?All In? and having too many investments in your portfolio ? but you?ll need to walk this line to beat the market.

#3: Having No System in Place

This has got to be the biggest mistake most investors make. Novice investors get lucky a few times and think they have it figured out. The best investors have systems for beating the market ? and they follow a pre-set pattern of success over and over again.

Warren Buffet doesn?t just randomly buy stocks. Mr. Buffet follows a system. It?s given him massive success on many stocks over a period of decades. It is not just his skill that made him one of the wealthiest people on the planet.

Mr. Buffet became a multi-billionaire through his investment system, a system built on his skills and insights. The insights are great, but taking advantage of those insights by using a carefully thought out plan is what made him wealthy.

#4: Making Things Too Difficult

This is a less common mistake but extremely frustrating for some people. Some people make their investing too hard to do consistently.

Many people learn enough about the markets and investing to be profitable investors but then make the mistake of making the actual?process?of investing and trading too hard to do.

What does this mean?

For example, it?s pretty easy to find investment systems which work well.

Momentum Systems work ? so do Value and Small Cap investment systems. If you shop a bit you can find them.?Trend Following 101 offers a highly successful Momentum Trading System which you can check out by clicking here.

But good Value and Small Cap investing often require a huge time commitment. You?ll need to devote significant time every week ? every day ? to searching out quality investments.

Any investment system can only work if you are consistent. This means that you must find and make the investments again and again, month after month. That means that you?ll need to do this over a period of years to make real money.

So when you are looking at systems, whether you purchase a system or create your own, it?s not very practical to use a system that will take 20 hours a week to uncover good, profitable investments. After all, the purpose of investing is to make money, to enjoy more of the finer things of life, right? If you are spending all of your time on the investing, you won?t have any time left for anything fun.

Here?s a good rule to follow: Any worthwhile investment system needs to be very easy to do over and over again.

#5: Watch for High fees

Paying high fees is a major account killer. This is undoubtedly the worst mistake. It?s the worst mistake out of this entire list, because high fees make profitable strategies?unprofitable.

That?s right ? when your fees are too high, profitable strategies become unprofitable.

Even the best investments do not survive high fees. If you fix just one mistake today, fix this one. Make sure you are paying low fees. Look at discount brokers like eTrade, TD Ameritrade, Merrill, and others. Also, trade Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) instead of Mutual Funds.

I created the?Trend Following 101 EZ ETF Momentum System?due to a string of conversations I had with friends about their investing. While I have many friends in the financial industry, I am lucky enough to have a bunch of very smart and very successful friends who aren?t professional traders or investors. They have jobs and families, so they don?t have time to actively trade the market. They wanted something that has low risk, low fees, and yet still makes them good money.

But the advice they were getting from their brokers was awful. They were paying huge fees for ?diversification? which ended up making them match the returns of the market, and then exposed them to huge risk in the stock market. They were getting the worst of all worlds, and paying a fortune for it.

I figured if they were having this problem, others were too. That?s why I created the EZ ETF Momentum System, to beat these mistakes in the easiest way possible.

A good system will beat these 5 trading mistakes automatically. A good investment system has smart choices built into every step.

  • Low fees
  • Proper Diversification
  • Easy to execute
  • Repeatable Success

Fortunately, the EZ ETF system has all of these smart choices built directly into the system from the ground up. That way, when you are investing, you?ll avoid the 5 costly account killers.

A Days Worth of {Delicious} Recipes for Skin Cancer Prevention ...

kale dipLoaded with phytonutrients, this triple pepper kale dip may play a role in skin cancer prevention.

I?ve been celebrating Celiac Awareness all month long, but there is another important celebration going on in May that is near and dear to my heart, and that is Skin Cancer Awareness Month.? I hope you will celebrate with me by trying some of my favorite antioxidant and phytonutrient rich recipes, that are not only delicious, but may also play a role in skin cancer prevention.

As a blue-eyed blonde {ahem?with a little help from my hairdresser these days}, with a history of tanning in my late teens/early 20?s, several dysplastic moles and one basal cell skin cancer in my not so distant past, skin cancer prevention is always on my mind.

With this said, I urge everyone to see your physician or dermatologist for an annual skin cancer check, since both basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas are almost always curable with early detection, and even localized {non-spreading} melanoma, a more serious form of skin cancer, has a 98 % cure rate when treated early.

So, PLEASE, be sure and get your skin checked! And be sure to review The Skin Cancer Foundation website for more important information on risk factors, detection, and prevention of both non-melanoma and melanoma skin cancers.

While the research regarding nutrition, and skin cancer prevention is far from conclusive, there is some evidence that foods high in antioxidants and phytonutrients, including luetin, lycopene, carotenoids, epicatechin, quercetin, and Vitamin E, have shown promise as photoprotectants in clinical, animal and cell culture studies. In addition, two very interesting recent studies, one human and one animal, showed the potential for caffeine {or caffeine combined with exercise} to play a role in skin cancer prevention.? As a coffee and tea junkie lover, all I can say is more good news!

Finance your dream home with purchase money loan | Fit Finance

Article by Personal Finance Guru

Almost two years ago, my friend embarked on a journey to build her dream home. For Sarah and John, buying the dream house in Sacramento seemed only fitting. Buying a home may be your dream, but you cannot afford to be carried away by emotions only. You are trying to build a concrete home, so you need to be realistic. But not everyone is fortunate enough to have a huge bank balance to tap into. They approached the bank for home loans to finance their home. With a 20% down payment and bank loan they were short of couple of thousands to make that home their dream home. Then one of our neighbors suggested purchase money loan. On doing some research we found out that purchase money loan is a form of seller-financing used in real estate. Instead of a third-party, such as a bank, providing a large sum of money to finance the purchase of a home, the seller simply agrees to let the buyer make installment payments over time. A recourse loan is one in which the seller/lender can sue the buyer/borrower for the balance of the loan if the buyer fails to make payments or defaults on the loan. We approached our seller and he agreed to finance the remaining amount through purchase money loan. Sarah and John could see their next 50 years of married life in their dream house

Nothing is permanent in life, including finding yourself in a bad financial situation. You can have a bad credit rating due to several factors, such as loss of job, irregular and late repayments, and credit card debt. In such a situation, bad credit loans are like an oasis in the desert providing the much-needed money for your various needs. Bad credit loans can be used for emergencies due to hard financial circumstances or for leisure. Moreover, such loans are available even to those people who have bad credit or no credit. Anyone can face credit problems at some time or the other in his/her life and bad credit can happen at any time due to various factors. Even the most financially sound people can suffer from bad credit and if this happens, you should try to get a bad credit loan to tide over your financial predicament. There are two types of bad credit loans: secured bad credit loans and unsecured bad credit loans. Consumers prefer the unsecured type as they do not have to put up any guarantee, although both the types are popular.

Home loans are undoubtedly very important in buying a new house. But there are various other things, which are of important as well. In fact, a home loan checklist is pivotal to the entire process of applying for a home loan. It is that piece of paper that endows you with a great deal of leeway, saving you time and energy. The loan market is a jungle out there and you need to hunt around getting a loan with a best catch. Many people make the mistake of signing up for the first home loan lending company that they come across. But this is where they go wrong. Unless you shop around for the best rates, they are not going to come your way. For every lender who is willing to offer you good rates, there might be another lender willing to offer one percent lower. All that you need to do is search and you will find a better home loan lending company. Another aspect of home loan companies that needs a special mention is that you may want to make sure that you do not have to sign any contract before you read all the fine lines in the contract. There are many companies that offer extremely low rates and then charge you hidden charges. In the end you end up paying more than what you would have ever wanted. Remember, it?s a jungle out there.

Am I Bipolar?Asking help from China ? | Health and Fitness

Question by Kevin: Am I Bipolar?Asking help from China ?
Due to the backward medical care and doctors of impatience in my country, I have to turn to you, and hope you could give me some opinions and consultation.

1 family heredity

?1?My mother has had manic bipolar disorder with psychotic symptoms (auditory & visual hallucination) since 1991. Now, her manic and psychotic symptoms have subsided with Lithium 500 mg, valproic acid 400 mg?and
risperidone 2 mg everyday. Currently, she is sleeping too much, and her mental ability, memory, and agility decline dramatically, unable to work, read and understand newspaper, making simple mistakes all the time. It seems that my mother is permanently ?disabled? and there is no hope for her to recover.

My mother?s younger sister has excitable and changeable mood, easy to make a angry fuss over dialy simple stuff. But she manages to work perfectly well.

(2) My father is easy to get angry and anxious as he is aging (I don?t think there is anything wrong with him; his bad temper has a lot to do with family frustrations). And my father?s mother got anxiety disorder (I am not so sure) during cu-l-tu-ral re-vo-lu-ti-on. Now she keeps worrying about my health and future.

2 My History

At the age 11, I suddenly felt the whole world was collapsing??that was typical depression (morning severe but at night felt better). With no medical intervention, it lasted 6 months and almost completely subsided, only I myself turned to be an introverted person with some sense of inferiority.

At the age 15, I felt the same again. Again, it lasted 8 months and gradually subsided, with residual minor symptoms like anxiety, and mild depression. Therefore, I sought psychiatristic help. That psychiatrist prescribed me fluoxetine. Taking it for 2 weeks, 20 mg/day, I felt very typical mild maniac symptoms (fast thinking, unusual excitement, need for less sleep, etc).

Then another psychiatrist diagnosed me as ultra rapid-cycling bipolar disorder (predominantly depression), and gave me low dosage of Lithium+carbamazepine+various antidepressants. And I took that combination for 2 years, but felt nothing at all , even no side effects. During that time, I felt as mild depressive as before, plus anxiety and very disturbing obsessive-compulsive thinking. With no effects at all, I decided to stop all medications.

Years went by, in 2005, I felt my memory declined and I couldn?t focus for a long time, and the feeling of loneliness almost killed me. So I sought local psychiatristic help again. This time, I was prescribed with arbamazepine alone with no antidepressant, (800mg /day). Quite paradoxically and unexpectedly, I felt more agitation, anxiety, and anger than ever before. I could quarrel with my dear parents and threw precious items into pieces. Almost all the anti-maniac mood stabilizers (lithium, carbamazepine, valproic acid) seem to make me feel more ?emotionally turbulent?

Now I am taking Lamotrigine (50MG/DAY), a mood stabilizer supposedly to work for the depressive symptoms. But I am feeling mental dullness, restlessness, and agitation. With addictive tranquilizes (like clonazepam), I could feel much better. I am trying to explain everything to local doctors, but they dismiss me as ?somebody beyond redemption?? scolding me with impatience.

Other symptoms I am experiencing:loneliness, fatigue, lack of interest, erectile difficulty, premature ejaculation, and decreased orgasm.

3 I have some suspicions and questions:

(1) Is it a wrong diagnosis? Is it borderline personality disorder? But I clearly experienced mild maniac symptoms at the early stage. Every summer from 1998?2002, I got elevated mood mixed with mild depression. I even s-to-le things from stores and got a-rres-ted. But in the winter and fall, all goes down

(2) Why do anti-maniac mood-stablizing agents worsen my symptoms?
Taking any of them (lithium, carbamazepine, valproic acid), initially I was fuming with anger, agitation, and irritability. If those were the side effects, how long would them subside????

(3) Will a restart of a medication after short-term discontinuation worsen everything? Due to the discomfort felt, I had to discontinue mood-stablizing agents, and due to the unstable mood, I had to resume the old meds.

(4) How would I feel if taking mood-stablizing agents when I am unipolar depression or completely mentally normal??

Thank you very much for reading my long ?complaints?, and I?ve lost hope for life now. Since no doctor in my country could offer any help any more, I count on you really! I am in such a dilemma, and I am eager to hear any of your suggestions! I have to overcome the current ordeal, and find a job to make a living and support my family! Thank you again for your kindly help and advice!

Best answer:

Answer by lil bit
It sounds like you have the same symptoms as me ? depression, obsessive-compulsive thinking, racing thoughts, anxiety.

It sounds like you have Bipolar ? but more depressive; along with anxiety and OCD (obsessive/compulsive)

I have found that I need to ?fight? for my life sometimes with doctors. The best medication that has helped me is ? Abilify (an antidepressant that helps bipolar). I also take Luvox (OCD), Wellbuterin (depression) and Klonopin (anxiety).

Each person reacts differently to the chemicals we put into our bodies which could explain why you have certain side effects.

My doctor doesn?t worry about diagnosis ? but treats my SYMPTOMS. Sounds like you need similar treatment

I am not certain how your body will react to different medications. For me, it has been 19 years of trial ? until finding the best combination (listed above) but I am open to changes as recommended by the doctor. Again, Abilify has helped me the most; and Klonopin helps well with anxiety, but it kind of makes my thinking sluggish

(AP) ? President Barack Obama and his party are redoubling their fundraising efforts. They're doing it in the wake of robust hauls by Republican rival Mitt Romney and a slew of GOP-leaning super PACs that are raking in cash from party faithful who are highly motivated to topple the Democrat.

Obama still has a significant edge, but it's shrinking rapidly.

That explains why the president is plunging back into fundraising on Wednesday with a series of events in Denver and California's Silicon Valley. He's looking to stockpile cash to pay for his coast-to-coast organization, advertising to promote his message and get-out-the-vote operations in key states.

Learning the Hard Way

The international renown of Johns Hopkins Medical School isn?t always a good thing. Its proximity to Washington, DC is another problem. Together, they produce a stream of foreign doctors intent on seeing Washington and then Hopkins, an hour away in Baltimore. The problem for a Hopkins scientist like me is what to do with the visitors once they are here. Often, their English skills are weak. Usually, they are only interested in checking off a line on their itinerary. Their most frequent, and my favorite, response to the question ?What is your research interest?? is ?Johns Hopkins is the finest hospital in North America.? Unless they are from Mexico, in which case they say ?in America.? So, if you?re a busy head of lab, you really don?t have time, and if you are a good head of lab, you don?t burden your trainees with entertainment duty. I prided myself in becoming very good at avoiding these interactions.

One day I received an email from a friend in otolaryngology. She said that there was a visitor from China who was interested in my lab and wanted to spend a day with me. I figured that this was a code for ?I?m really busy, and I?m really tired of this physician.? I demurred, I was too busy, and in fact, I didn?t answer her email. My friend simply subverted my ruse by giving my email address to Dr. Peng Ding, M.D., Ph.D. from Shanghai.

Dr. Ding began to email me every day. She emailed her CV, which had a few publications in Chinese, outside my area of expertise. I delayed. I avoided. She started calling, and one day left a phone message saying that she was called ?Cee Ling? and really wanted to meet me. Finally, after a week, I figured I was being rude, and assigned one of my post-docs, Nicolai, to help me do a dog-and-pony show for Cee Ling at the end of the week.

Nicolai and I debated what project to discuss with her. We had just finished working on how parts of the long thin muscles in your neck can do different things at the same time. They can because there are many muscle fibers that make up each muscle, and many small nerves going to different fibers. What we used to think of as a single muscle was working like a group of many small muscles. It was really interesting stuff, and might just catch the attention of a foreign doctor.

But, we had also just written a grant we were really excited about. I had done a lot of work on the motor nerves that activate muscles during swallowing. Now we wanted to study how information from the sensory nerves inside your throat affects the function of the muscles when you swallow. Swallowing is supposed to be a reflex. This meant that, once a swallow has started, the sensation signals to the brain should not influence the motor signals to the muscles. We were going to examine the relationships between sensation and muscle function in animals by taking away the sensation with an anesthetic.

There are two particular nerves we were interested in, called the laryngeal nerves, branches of a large nerve coming directly from the brain stem. These nerves convey sensory signals from the larynx, or voice box, to the brain. One, the superior laryngeal nerve comes down from the top of the neck, and the other, the recurrent laryngeal nerve travels down into the chest near the heart and ?recurs? that is, travels back up to the larynx from below. Other people?s work suggested that these two nerves have an effect on swallowing. We wanted to measure exactly what that effect is.

Dr. Ding arrived 10 minutes early, and was very excited to be in the lab. I felt bad about delaying to see her. I realized that she didn?t call herself Cee Ling, but Ceiling, because she was a very tall Chinese woman. She listened very politely to the muscle fibers story, and asked some surprisingly good questions. She looked at all our equipment and computer programs, and asked more good questions. But I couldn?t figure out why she was so interested in my work. All she was doing was confirming my hypothesis that she needed to show people back in China that she had met some American researchers.

Then I asked my standard question about what research was she interested in. As she began talking, my eyes got big. She said that she wanted to study the problems that patients have with swallowing when their laryngeal sensory nerves get damaged in surgeries. Nicolai looked at me and I looked at him. Ceiling went on. She said that she thought there was an important link between the loss of sensory information from these nerves that gave problems for the muscles in the neck and what made swallowing problems.

You could have picked Nicolai and me off the floor. Ceiling said that she thought I might be interested in this problem, because I had worked on the muscles before. I started laughing. Nicolai started telling Ceiling about the grant we just wrote. It was her turn to look surprised and amazed and very happy. She said ?I have two more weeks in America, and I will stop doing everything else, if I can come and work in your lab.?

Ceiling, Nicolai and I had a great time in those two weeks. We did two brand new preliminary experiments and got incredible results. Ceiling went back to China, Nicolai got a job at Brown University, and I needed a new post-doc.

Ceiling has been working in my lab for two years now. The clinical implications of my work are much stronger for her input. Our results are much more interesting. But the most important change is in my attitude towards those foreign visitors. 99 out of 100 may think that Johns Hopkins is a great hospital. But the 100th will change your research.

Was Donna Summer tribute cut off for an ad?

By Courtney Garcia, msnbc.com contributor

Four artists were remembered at Sunday's Billboard Music Awards, but fans are buzzing about how disco queen Donna Summer's tribute was noticeably cut off.

Summer, Whitney Houston, Adam Yauch and Robin Gibb were all honored at the ceremony in different ways.

Pop star Natasha Bedingfield honored Summer, who died of cancer May 17,?calling her "a?remarkable woman who brought so much light, and who inspired many women, including myself through her music. And if we can remember her through her music, this will never really be the last dance.?

Bedingfield then began singing Summer's Academy Award-winning song "Last Dance" as photos of the icon were displayed on a screen overhead.? But?just as?Bedingfield picked up the beat for the main portion of the dance track,?she was abruptly cut off so the show could cut to commercial.?The edit left some viewers unsatisfied.

?She sounded great, but producers cut to a commercial just when Natasha was getting to the good part of the song,? pop music writer D?luv wrote on his blog, Chart Rigger. ?That was definitely one of the more tacky parts of the evening.?

??Did @ABC #BBMA's really just go to commercial in the middle of Natasha Bedingfield singing Donna Summer's classic Last Dance? Bad call,? wrote blogger Mary Burt-Godwin.

?And Twitterer Pnelson added, ?We miss you Donna Summer but clearly "Last Dance" only gets 1min 28sec of our time. xoxo #BBMA.?

?Although four tributes may seem an unprecedented amount for one awards show, some fans felt there should have been more, pointing out that recently deceased musicial legends Davy Jones, Levon Helm, Etta James and Dick Clark were not mentioned during the show.

?Billboard absolutely blew it this year. Some heads need to roll back at headquarters,? a reader going?by Eagles Wings commented on a related Yahoo! News story.??Then to cut the tribute to Donna?(Summer) short to go to a stinking commercial. Also unforgivable. Unbounded greed at work again.??

Did you find the cut in the Donna Summer tribute song jarring? Should Dick Clark, Davy Jones and others have been honored? Vote in our poll above, and tell us on Facebook.
