Enbridge 2Q profit, sales fall on lower gas prices

HOUSTON (AP) ? Enbridge Energy Partners LP, which operates oil and natural gas pipelines and facilities, said Tuesday that its second-quarter earnings fell 28 percent on lower selling prices for natural gas liquids.

The results fell below Wall Street expectations for adjusted earnings and revenue.

Enbridge said that net income attributable to limited partners fell to $93.7 million, or 33 cents per share, for the three months ended June 30 compared with $130.3 million, or 51 cents per share, a year earlier.

The company said that excluding items such as hedging gains, it would have earned 23 cents per share. Analysts, who usually exclude items from their estimates, expected 31 cents per share, according to FactSet.

Revenue plunged 35 percent to $1.55 billion from $2.37 billion a year ago and well below the $1.77 billion forecast of analysts.

The company said the recent price drop in natural gas liquids was partly offset by higher pipeline revenue.

Enbridge also announced that it will make a cash payment of 54.35 cents per share on Aug. 14 to shareholders as of Aug. 7. The company said the 2.1 percent increase was in line with its goal of raising annual distributions by 2 percent to 5 percent.

The shares rose 70 cents, or 2.4 percent, to $29.77 in afternoon trading. They are near the high end of their 52-week range of $24.66 to $33.85.

Achieve a Fit Body and Healthy Mind with a Swim Spa Fitness | US ...

A swim spa has been among the most popular ways to achieve a healthy and toned body. But in the recent past, a holistic underwater fitness system that merges the benefits of a spa and a gym is making waves?quite literally! It?s a leisure pool and underwater gym rolled into one. It gives you unmatched flexibility to plan your workouts depending on how busy your work schedule is.

What?s the concept of a fitness-oriented spa?

Spa fitness solutions are essentially aimed at giving you a healthy body while offering you complete relaxation. On the contrary, in a regular gym you would need to sweat it out and workouts become too arduous for you to handle sometimes. But since you have an underwater gym right in your home, you can do two or even three sessions in a day if you so wish!

These days, you shall notice this interesting concept in the market wherein the manufacturers have thrown in equipment such as a stretching bar, D handles, bar straps, ankle cuffs, a body belt and goggles that allow you to perform several exercises. For instance, you could walk, jog, row, swim, or stretch to get your body in top-notch form. The most interesting part is that this system can also be fitted with rowers to help you strengthen your upper body muscle groups.

Experience the benefits of hydrotherapy:

Numerous scientific studies have proven that hydrotherapy can be useful in injury recovery, rehabilitation, cardiovascular health, overcoming depression and prenatal health programs. As you slide into the pool and switch on the hydro jets, you can feel the strains and tension from your muscles evaporating. The effect is so magical that it?s better experienced than described. Senior citizens can experience the benefits of this fitness system too. So if workouts don?t interest you much, you could use this underwater spa as a wellness solution instead. From eight to eighty year-olds, there?s a wide assortment of activities to choose from.

The intricacies of installation and maintenance

A swim spa has several rejuvenation benefits. By installing one in your backyard, you don?t have to drive down to the swimming pool for an underwater spa session. On weekends, the entire family can splash around and spend some quality moments in the pool. You can even teach your kids how to swim in a very secure and controlled environment. This spa fitness system can be installed in a few hours and with very just the basic maintenance, it shall last you for several years. You could install it on a deck or patio. Alternatively, it can be installed in-ground as a continuous swimming pool. There?s also the option of using it in the form of an above-ground portable hot tub.

With benefits that span much beyond a regular swim spa, it?s clear that this underwater fitness system is an investment in your long-term well-being.

Pests, which include insects like bees and wasps, and rodents like rats and mice, can be really hazardous both to human health and to structures and buildings. Especially when aggravated and provoked, such pests can inflict painful bites and stings, causing different reactions like pain and allergies, with some even becoming life threatening. Sadly, a research done by Chartered Institute of Environmental Health in UK revealed a tenfold increase in the number of councils that are no longer providing pest control services. The good news, however, is that you have the option to get rid of pests on your own, or have an Islington pest control professional do the job for you. In Islington, many companies are already available, offering different pest control services for different types of pests. The process often starts from home inspection -- which includes identification of sources of infestations, the amount of infestation and how much the infestation has damaged the structure. If you have chosen to hire an N1 pest control expert, the service provider would offer suggestions for pest extermination while considering the concerns you may have about the processes. Also, while an expert may have specific strategies and methods for certain situations, they may tailor their actions to ensure that they do not just apply the best treatment but also employ pest control techniques that you are comfortable with. The process also includes the use of either chemical or non-chemical type of extermination. The fastest way of eliminating pests and the most commonly used by experts is chemical extermination, or the use of insecticide sprays or powder. Experts generally use chemicals and compounds that are specifically designed to kill pests, and at the same time prevent damage to structures. Meanwhile, especially if you are doing the process on your own, you may also choose to use non-chemical pest control methods, such as habitat modification, elimination of possible hiding spots for pests, and application of pest-baiting or trapping systems. For a small infestation, or an infestation that has just started to grow, eradicating pests on your own may be wiser. There are several products that are easily accessible in the market. Some of the basic tools, which may already be kept at your house, include a mini flashlight, screwdriver, dusting equipment, baits gun and spray rigs, as well as safety equipment including chemical gloves and goggles. Meanwhile, if the infestation has gotten serious and has grown into something that is difficult to handle, asking help from an expert may be your best option. Islington pest control companies offer diverse services, including emergency services like removing hives and nests, as well as killing pests that have started to plague your home; pretreatment of newly constructed homes and buildings which include sealing corners that can be potential avenues of entry for pests; and infestation inspections and sanitation services. Some companies also offer follow-up services.

Offering different types of pest control and treatment for different types of pests, we are one of the most reliable Islington pest control companies you can rely on. Visit our website for more information about the effective N1 pest controlservices we offer.

Concrete Garden Edging Ideas to Improve Home Exteriors

Having the most expensive furniture set does not make you the owner of a gorgeous abode. Sometimes it is the outside of a home that gives beauty to its entirety. Since this is also the first thing that people notice when they enter your home, you should make sure that you will get their words of praises. So if your outside area lacks the touch, you might want to consider the following kerbing ideas.

Do it with colours!

Using a mixture of hues for your lawn is the best way to draw someone's attention. You can steer away from earthy tints as these are really common nowadays. Instead, pick something that will blend well with the rest of scenery.

Incorporate patterns.

There is something about patterns that make them so impressive that is why you should incorporate some into your walkways. Visitors will surely love taking leisurely paces during your next outdoor party.

Texture is important too!

Whether you do the task yourself or call in the experts for help, make sure that the concrete materials used are rich in texture. This will certainly make a very noticeable difference.

Add a flight of steps.

Feel like royalty by putting steps into your entryway. This adds a decorative finish to your abode, making it more inviting for your visitors. Three to four steps will be enough to achieve a splendid appearance.

Arches and curves are a plus!

To get that customised look, you can use architectural accents. Pre-cast columns and miniature pillars can make a great outcome especially if you put them near a finished concrete garden edging. For that final touch, paint them white or anything that can complement well with everything else.

Invest in faux gardening products.

Many homeowners believe that modern gardens should look like those that are featured in magazines. For this reason, they tend to spend a huge amount of money just to attain the appeal that they want. Some of them are plastic flamingos, mirrors, water fountains, and the likes.

Landscaping, landscaping, landscaping!

This task can be tricky; thus, the need to hire people who specialise in it. The best thing about getting their services is they can provide you with creative solutions. You can also pitch in some of your ideas, and they will do the rest.

The project may be costly yet the results can be stunning. In addition, it will not only make your home beautiful, but will also increase its market value. So, pursue your dreams and start outside!

Apple earnings miss takes bite out of Asia supplier shares

TAIPEI (Reuters) - Shares in top Asian suppliers to Apple Inc took a hit on Wednesday after the company's latest quarterly results missed expectations, although several recovered ground as investors looked ahead to the company's new products later this year.

Hon Hai, LG Display and Toshiba all sank more than 5 percent after Apple posted a 21 percent rise in net income to $8.8 billion, or $9.32 a share, lagging Wall Street's forecast of $10.37 a share.

Taiwan's Hon Hai, Apple's main manufacturing partner, partly recovered to stand down 3.4 percent at 0250 GMT in a broader market that was little changed, while South Korean flat-screen maker LG Display was last down 3.6 percent.

Japan's Toshiba Corp, which supplies NAND flash memory chips to Apple, fell 7.3 percent in a Tokyo market down 1 percent. Toshiba said on Tuesday it would cut production of memory chips to weather tumbling prices and oversupply.

A raft of smaller Taiwanese suppliers were a mixed bag, with camera lens maker Largan up 0.17 percent and touch panel supplier Wintek unchanged. Quanta Computer, which makes Apple's Macbook PCs, fell 2.8 percent. Mac computer sales were flat in the quarter from the previous one.

Pegatron, which assembles some Apple products including iPhones, was up 0.85 percent.

Barclays Capital said in a note that the downside would be limited for Taiwanese suppliers because they have already collectively underperformed Apple's share price by 40 percent year-to-date.

It added that those suppliers who had gained year to date, including Hon Hai and Quanta, may fall due to profit taking.

Samsung Electronics, which supplies chips for Apple, was down 0.8 percent, but investors were also keeping an eye on coming sales of the iPhone5.

Apple divided the blame for the shortfall between muted consumer purchases in Western Europe and a pullback in demand as consumers wait for the new iPhone model that many expect will be launched in September or October.

Fans are expecting Apple to launch a completely redesigned phone that has a bigger screen, rather than just add or change a few features as it did with the current model.

Tough questions after Beijing rain storm kills 37

BEIJING (AP) ? As China's flood-ravaged capital dealt with the aftermath of the heaviest rain in six decades Monday, including the deaths of 37 people, questions were being raised about whether the city's push for modernization came at the expense of basic infrastructure such as drainage networks.

Rescuers were still searching buildings that collapsed during Saturday night's torrential downpour and some roads that were covered in waist-deep water remained closed. The city government said as of Sunday night, 25 people had drowned, six were killed when houses collapsed, one was hit by lightning and five were electrocuted by fallen power lines.

Beijing residents shared photos online of submerged cars stranded on flooded streets, city buses with water up to commuters' knees and cascades of water rushing down the steps of overpasses.

The official China Daily newspaper reported that 60,000 people had been evacuated from their homes and damages from the storm had reached at least 10 billion yuan ($1.6 billion).

Although the worst-hit areas were in rural hilly outskirts of the city, the scale of the disaster was a major embarrassment for Beijing, the showcase capital of China where things like this are not supposed to happen.

The city has seen tens of billions of dollars poured into its modernization, adding iconic venues for the 2008 Olympics, the world's second-largest airport, new subway lines and dazzling skyscrapers ? all while basics like water drainage were apparently neglected.

Many were left wondering how badly prepared other less-prosperous parts of China must be.

"If so much chaos can be triggered in Beijing, the capital of the nation, problems in urban infrastructure of many other places can only be worse," said a commentary in Monday's state-run Global Times newspaper. "In terms of drainage technology, China is decades behind developed societies."

There was similar criticism on the popular microblog service, Sina Weibo.

"This is China's capital of Beijing. Look what happens when it's hit by a rainstorm," wrote Weibo user Wen Hui. "The drainage systems of Rome that were built 2,500 years ago are still in use and you can drive a car through them. Can a dog get through Beijing's drainage tunnels?"

The criticism mirrors some of that seen after a high-speed train crash in Wenzhou in southeastern China a year ago Monday. That turned into a public-relations nightmare for the government and led many to question the quality of infrastructure in the country and the government's transparency on disasters.

Some pointed out that Saturday's deluge was historic in nature, with the Global Times noting it was the heaviest rainstorm in the capital in 61 years.

"In just in one day, it rained as much as it normally rains in six months in Beijing," said Zhang Junfeng, a senior engineer from the Ministry of Transport who runs weekend tours of Beijing reservoirs and gives lectures on water conservancy. "No drainage system can withstand rains this big."

The capital's skies were clear Monday, with traffic largely back to normal and the city's main airport operating normally after hundreds of flights were canceled or delayed over the weekend. But hard hit areas were still feeling the effects.

In Qinglonghu, a village about 40 kilometers (25 miles) from downtown Beijing where many migrant workers from surrounding provinces have settled, at least two dozen single-story brick homes were flooded. Local residents said Monday they were terrified to go back into their homes for fear they would collapse. They said they had no drinking water or food and had yet to get any assistance from local officials.

At least three people from the village were believed killed, locals said, including a man crushed by a falling power line and a woman and her baby daughter who were washed away.

"We couldn't save them," said 50-year-old Wang Lianfeng, a villager who had taken shelter on a roof when she saw the woman and her 8-month-old girl swept away. Wang sobbed as she described being unable to reach them. She said the body of the girl was found but the mother is still missing.

Other areas around Qinglonghu appeared minimally affected. Piles of dirt from a large construction site appeared to have formed a dam that kept the downpour from draining into a nearby river.

The village is in Fangshan district, the worst hit area of the city, which received 460 millimeters (18.4 inches) of rain on Saturday.

Heavy rain also proved deadly elsewhere in the country. Six people were killed by landslides in Sichuan province in the west, Xinhua said, citing disaster officials. Four people died in Shanxi province in the north when their truck was swept away by a rain-swollen river. At least eight people died and 17 were missing after heavy rains hit in neighboring Shaanxi province.

China suffers flooding and dozens of storm-related deaths every summer during its rainy season, but such a heavy downpour in relatively dry Beijing is unusual.

Pioneer Spacecraft Warmth Takes Heat Off Relativity

60-Second Space60-Second Space | Space

The tiny slowing of the two Pioneer spacecraft, known as the Pioneer Anomaly and considered by some to challenge general relativity, is probably due to the heat produced by electronics and radioactive decay. John Matson reports.

More 60-Second Space

Challenge Einstein, and you?d better be prepared to lose.?

There was the recent case of the neutrinos that now appear not to exceed the speed of light. And now a puzzling quirk in the trajectories of two 1970s-era spacecraft appears not to challenge what we know about physics.??

The Pioneer 10 and Pioneer 11 probes have been traversing the solar system for some 40 years. But as they venture outward, they?ve been slowing down a bit more than would be expected from the sun?s gravitational pull.

It was thought that the discrepancy, known as the Pioneer Anomaly, could reveal a flaw in Einstein?s general relativity, the reigning theory of gravity. But a new analysis offers a more mundane explanation.

Pioneer 10 and 11 are slowing down due to a small-but-ever-present thermal recoil. Both spacecraft give off heat from their electronics and from the radioactive decay of their plutonium fuel, and that?s enough to impart the measured deceleration. The researchers liken it to photons from a car?s headlights pushing gently back on the vehicle. The analysis is in the journal Physical Review Letters. [Slava G. Turyshev et al, Support for the Thermal Origin of the Pioneer Anomaly]

So the Pioneer Anomaly probably does not mean general relativity is broken. Score another one for Einstein.

?John Matson

ASUS loads P8Z77V with USB attached SCSI, beats Windows 8 to the punch

There's no doubt about it, USB 3.0 is wicked fast when pitted against its predecessors -- but the ancient bulk-only transport protocol it uses is showing its age. Some newer external drives hope sidestep the old protocol by supporting a new one: UASP, or, USB attached SCSI. As its name implies, the modern protocol leverages the SCSI command set to reduce latency, enable queue functions and improve performance for compatible drives. Windows 8 will ship with UASP drivers baked in, but the protocol is already available in the form of third-party controllers and drivers. Speaking of which, Hot Hardware found the functionality on ASUS' P8Z77V motherboard, and gave it a rundown. The conclusion? "Turbo and UASP modes will never hurt performance, and you've got early access to a capability that's already been wrapped into future versions of Windows. That's a win, all the way around." We're hard pressed to disagree. Check out the outfit's tests in full at the source link below.

Pentagon sending aircraft carrier to Mideast early

(AP) ? The Pentagon is sending an aircraft carrier to the Middle East several months early to make sure at least two carriers will constantly be present in the troubled region.

There are two carriers in the area now, but one was scheduled to leave before its replacement arrived to fill that gap, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta has approved sending by late summer the USS John C. Stennis strike group, which also includes the Aegis guided-missile cruiser USS Mobile Bay and some 5,500 sailors.

The extra presence was approved late last week on a request by Gen. James Mattis, commander of U.S. Central Command, Pentagon press Secretary George Little said Monday.

Questioned about whether the deployment is a response to problems with Iran or perhaps the violence in Syria, he declined to be specific. Little said the need comes from a "wide range of security issues" in the region.

"This is not about any one particular country or any one particular threat," he said.

The USS John C..Stennis will have to accelerate its training and re-equipping of the ship, because it just left the area in December.

After that last deployment, Iran's army chief Gen. Ataollah Salehi in January warned the U.S. warship not to return to the Gulf, but its replacement, the carrier USS Abraham Lincoln, entered the Gulf without incident later in January.

Although U.S. warships have had a presence in the region for decades, the deployment schedule change comes during an escalating showdown between Iran and the West over the Islamic Republic's nuclear program.

The Pentagon also recently doubled the number of minesweepers in the region, giving the U.S. greater flexibility to counter any Iranian effort to mine the Strait of Hormuz at the mouth of the Persian Gulf.

The strait is routinely patrolled by Iranian and U.S. warships. Iran has repeatedly threatened to close the strategic waterway, which is the transit route for about a fifth of the world's oil supply, in retaliation for increased Western-led sanctions.

Another ship, the USS Ponce, has also been sent. The amphibious transport dock was recently retrofitted to become what is known as an afloat forward staging base.

Fujifilm sues Motorola over broad camera and phone patents, claims RAZRs and Xyboards are at fault

Motorola RAZR MAXX review

Motorola won't have had much of a break following the dismissal of a key Apple lawsuit, after all. In a low-profile move, Fujifilm has sued Motorola for allegedly violating four particularly broad patents on camera and phone technologies -- we're talking basics such as transmitting data outside of a cellular network. The camera designer has supposedly been pushing for a licensing deal since April of last year without much success, and it's asserting that "at least" a wide swath of Motorola devices released both before and after that time are the key offenders, including the RAZR MAXX and Xyboard lines. The complaint is scarcely into the docket and makes it difficult to gauge just what kind of chance Fujifilm has to win in court; we just know that Motorola's (and now Google's) patent lawsuit headache is developing into more of a migraine.

Samsung?s new retail store clearly inspired by Apple

samsung store vancouver

Samsung opened the doors to its first North American retail store in Vancouver, and it looks a lot like an Apple store.

Samsung and Apple have been at wits end over their patent disputes with Apple?s claims that the Korean electronics manufacturer and now retailer has been inspired by Apple. Now Apple could add more fuel to that fire. Samsung opened its doors to its first ever North American retail store in Buraby?s Metropolis in Metrotown, Vancouver. From the video of Samsung?s director of channel sales offering a tour of the store, we can?t help but notice just how much of the store resembles Apple?s own stores.

In comparing the feel and customer service offering between the two stores, you?ll notice the minimalistic and sleek design of the store. The white interior is accented by a light wood finish due to the wooden tables, which collectively gives off an ambiance normally associate with an Apple store. A few differentiators however for Samsung is the metallic accents and rounded corners (particularly of its desks). Apple?s aesthetic emphasizes sharp corners and lines.

While these design details alone doesn?t suffice for us to merit jumping to conclusions, Samsung?s retail store?s similarities with the Apple store is uncanny when you observe the blue sporting customer service representatives and the one-on-one station. There are some similarities evident between the two stores and we wouldn?t be surprised if the designer?s inspiration was the Apple store. But is it a copy? The answer is no. It?s not an exact replica, but it is obviously inspired by Apple?s successful retail chain.

samsung experience store ny

Samsung?s current design is an improvement over the dimly lit, black reflective finish of the Samsung Experience store, which you?ll see above in a photo taken by Jeremiah Owyang in 2010. The store opened in 2006 in New York City?s Time Warner building, but was more of a showcase, as you could not actually purchase products there.

If we were to entertain the idea that Samsung was looking to beat Apple at its own game, the company wouldn?t be the first. In October 2009, Microsoft opened the doors to its first retail store in Scottsdale, Arizona, with a design that was overseen by one of the Apple store designers:?he was a consultant. The similarities between the Microsoft store and Apple store are visible. In January, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer told?BusinessWeek?that he had every intention of beating Apple at its own game by placing Microsoft stores as close to every Apple store as possible. ?Well, the traffic is going to be there, and we?ve got to beat them any way,? he said.

While Microsoft is facing the pressures of the competition, Samsung has been giving Apple a run for its money. Apple has gone as far as to take preventative measures against Samsung?s Galaxy Tab and Nexus smartphones by threatening retailers with a court-ordered injunction to stop selling Samsung devices.

What are your thoughts on the Samsung store? Should every manufacturer have its own store?

Former Seahawks Coach Jim Mora Still Wants His Dirtbags, This Time With UCLA

I think it's safe to say that one of former Seahawks head coach Jim L. Mora's core football beliefs is that you have to be tough, and you have to develop a reputation of toughness. Intimidation is key. In Mora's one season as the Seattle coach, one of the most memorable things he said was that the Seahawks needed more 'dirtbags'. That theme has followed him to Los Angeles, where he recently told CBSSports.com's Dennis Dodd, "The perception of UCLA football to those of who were not involved with UCLA football, was that UCLA football had become soft."

"That was the perception," Mora reiterated, "Our intent is to make sure that nobody can say that about us again. Whether it's truth, doesn't matter. Our goal is eliminate that perception, wipe it off the map, never let it cross anyone's lips again."

As Mora says, it's a reputation that he will seek to eliminate, and it's a similar situation to what he -- and I'd vouch for this just based on my perception of the team's reputation that season -- that he inherited in Seattle in 2009. He said back then late in the season, during the now infamous press conference where he described his desire for more dirtbags, "There are teams out there that say if you walk into Seattle and punch them in the face, they won't react. I know that's what Mike Singletary said on Saturday night before we played them two weeks ago." How did he know this? "Just, you know, got my sources. And he'll probably deny it, and that's OK. He should. But you know what? Every coach says that. I said it [when facing Seattle]."

Star-divide

Mora didn't get much of a chance to change the culture in Seattle, -- he was let go after only one season as the Seahawks hit the reset button on their front office, coaching staff, and ultimately, their roster. However, he'll now get the chance to change UCLA's reputation and culture and you've got to hand it to Mora for not beating around the bush. He wants a tough, hard-nosed team, and he's not afraid to call out his team or even individual players if they don't live up to that expectation.

"You're not going to change anything until you start playing football and people on Saturday see you and feel you," Mora told Dodd, "and walk off the field [saying], 'That's not a soft football team.' "

I can't say I disagree with Mora on all this, and I don't think his philosophy on toughness is what ultimately lost him his job in Seattle. In fact, after he departed, John Schneider and Pete Carroll have carried on that vision and stocked a football team full of tough, hard-nosed, and downright nasty players and restored the Seahawks' reputation, especially on defense, as a tough, hard-hitting team. Who knows if Mora would have had similar success, but you can't really knock what he's trying to do in L.A.

NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) ? Jennifer Capriati's tennis career ? and her teenage life ? took a number of twists and turns.

She started as a teenage prodigy, was later sidetracked with off-court troubles, rebounded to become a three-time Grand Slam champion and, now, her journey is complete with her induction into the International Tennis Hall of Fame.

Capriati and several others were inducted into the Hall during a 90-minute ceremony Saturday.

Joining Capriati were recently retired player Gustavo Kuerten, master player Manuel Orantes, tennis industry executive Mike Davies and wheelchair champion Randy Snow, who was honored posthumously.

In a tear-filled acceptance speech, the 36-year old Capriati remembered her great moments in the game and touched on some of her troubles off the court.

Capriati was presented by 2009 Hall of Fame inductee Monica Seles.

"I still managed to overcome some adversity, win a Gold Medal, win some Grand Slams and stand at the podium at the Hall of Fame," said Capriati, breaking into tears during her acceptance speech. "This is one milestone I thought I'd never achieve."

She now feels as though her tennis career is fulfilled.

"It's been quite a journey," Capriati said at a morning press conference. "Here, I look back at all those really great things I've accomplished and the achievements I've had and those achievements I overcame."

As a 14-year old, she burst onto the scene fresh out of the eighth grade and reached the semifinals at her first Grand Slam event ? the 1990 French Open.

Three years later, drug and other problems sidetracked her life and career. She temporarily dropped off the tour following the 1993 U.S. Open.

Her downturn didn't stop there. She was arrested that year for shoplifting at a Florida mall, and again the next year for marijuana possession. She also spent time in drug rehabilitation in 1994.

Capriati also feels she left the game a little earlier than she wanted because of injuries.

"It was tough having to leave the game," she said, cracking a bit with emotion. "It's like mourning a loved one that's gone and a relationship's that gone, a part of yourself. It wasn't easy, but something that's gone and what you loved to do.

"It took a while to accept that and let go. This is so great for me because it's putting a lot of closure to my career and I'm able to move forward, give thanks, take thanks, give the honor and take the honor, and just be acknowledged here. It means everything to me."

After dropping off the scene, she returned to the sport in 1996. Five years later, she reached those lofty expectations that were thrust upon her, beating past champions Seles, Lindsay Davenport and Martina Hingis en route to the 2001 Australian Open title and her first top-10 ranking in seven years.

She was selected as The Associated Press Female Athlete of the Year later that year. The comeback didn't stop there ? she followed that by capturing the French Open and was the only player to reach at least the semis in all four Grand Slams that year.

The highlight match of her career ? and maybe one of the top performances in the game ? was the 2002 Australian Open when she trailed Hingis 4-6, 0-4 before rallying to a three-set victory.

She won a gold medal for the United States at Barcelona in 1992. Her career ended in 2004 with a 430-176 record.

Kuerten was No. 1 in the world for 43 weeks and the clay-court specialist captured French Open titles in 1997, 2000 and '01.

"I believe it's the surface you have to suffer more," the 35-year old Brazilian said. "You have to be out there for many hours. You have to use every weapon you can and fight like a warrior. It's fun to try."

During his speech he joked about being enshrined along with Capriati.

"Jennifer, I don't want to compare my career to yours, otherwise they'd think about having me," he said.

Orantes, elected in the Master Player category, reached No. 2 in the world in 1973. The 63-year old Spanish star stayed in the top 10 for five straight years.

Davies was elected in the contributor category. He held executive positions with various tennis organizations and was a driving force behind the game's move to network television, instituting rules offering breaks for commercials to make the game more appealing to the networks.

"We basically tried to do things in a professional show business," the 76-year old said. "It was during our time we were basically able to get on TV."

Snow, who passed away in November 2009, won 22 major tournaments. His father, Tom, accepted on his late son's behalf.

"Randy's hero was Brad Parks," Snow's father said, referring to the Hall's first wheelchair entrant, enshrined in 2010.

PFT: Chiefs also preached to 'kill the head'

Terrell Suggs, Ed ReedAP

Ravens safety Ed Reed realizes that players can get what they want only by holding out.? Reed himself seems to be seriously considering a holdout of his own, even though he?s under contract for 2012.

Last month, I had an epiphany on this subject, thanks to our buddy Ross Tucker of NBC Sports Network, SiriusXM NFL Radio, Sports USA, and more.? I now believe that, regardless of whether a player is laboring under the slotted rookie deal that he has outperformed or whether he?s playing out a veteran deal that the team always has the unilateral ability to tear up and disregard, he has the right to hold out.

He has the right to hold out because, if he does, he?s behaving no differently than the men who amassed enough money and influence to own an NFL team.? Businessmen don?t simply trip into success (although some are born into it); they make shrewd decisions, based on the realities of any given situation with which they?re faced.

For players who have contracts and who want new ones, they can hold out if they?re willing to accept the potential consequences.? For starters, the player who holds out while under contract will be fined $30,000 per day.? He also may have to surrender bonus checks that he already has cashed, and possibly already has spent.? If he has fewer than four years of service toward free agency, a holdout could delay his entry to the open market by another year.? And he could face a fan and/or media backlash.

But, in the end, if he knows that his team needs him enough to eventually bend, it could be the smartest, shrewdest break he ever makes for himself.

That?s why we disagree completely, unequivocally, and totally with Ashley Fox of ESPN.com, who basically lectures Reed about the dangers of a holdout, urging him to be a good soldier and report for duty.? Fox argues that ?[h]oldouts rarely work,? citing the green-and-white brick wall into which diminutive receiver DeSean Jackson rammed his head when he held out in 2011.? Fox claims that all 32 teams will react as negatively as the Eagles did in Jackson?s case, prompting him to tuck his tail between his tookis and show up.

What about Titans running back Chris Johnson?? He turned a multi-week holdout into $30 million guaranteed, even though he was under contract for two more years.? Ditto for Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis, who held out two years ago, got paid, and may hold out again.

Many other players have held out, and they have gotten paid.? Maybe not what they wanted, but more than they were due to receive.

In Reed?s case, doing what the Ravens assume he?ll never do could get their attention.? And it could get them to give him more money.? And it could be much more money than he?d get come 2013, especially if he suffers an injury in 2012.

It?s inherently contradictory for journalists to in one breath fret about head injuries and in the next to discourage the men who put themselves in harm?s way from doing whatever they think they have to do to get fully compensated for the risks they take.

As long as the player accepts and understands the possible cost of a failed holdout, we fully support anyone who decides to take a stand, regardless of whether he has one year left on his contract, or 10.? If owners were players with skills that the team needed, that?s precisely what the owners would do, too.

T-Mobile to incentivize select 2G subscribers with upgrade offers during five-city US pilot

TMobile to incentivize select 2G subscribers with upgrade offers during fivecity US pilot

Growing tired of that EDGE-only device on T-Mobile? The carrier wants you to upgrade just as badly as you do, and may be willing to kick some extra incentives your way to help motivate the switch. In an attempt to clear devices from its 2G network, T-Mobile reportedly launched a pilot this month, targeting 5,000 select customers each in Boston, DC, Los Angeles, Miami and New York City with discount offers that vary slightly by market, and may include a waived upgrade fee, up to $100 (Boston) or $50 (NYC, DC) off any phone, or, exclusively for folks in Miami, the option to swap their device for a Samsung t259, t359 Smile or Gravity TXT for free with no new contract to sign. According to TmoNews, customers may receive a targeted offer if they're Classic or Legacy subscribers with 1,000 or more monthly minutes on a 2G device (the iPhone is not included). If the pilot is successful, T-Mobile may roll out the offer to customers in additional cities, as part of the carrier's refarming effort to grow HSPA+ network capacity. A full offer breakdown is available at the source link below.

July 10, 2012 - Forex

The U.S. Dollar traded mixed against the majority of its counterparts as market investors remained cautious ahead of a key meeting between E.U. Finance Ministers. The greenback rose early in the day following the release of economic data indicating that Japan?s Machine Orders slumped while China?s Consumer Price Inflation gained at the slowest pace since January of 2010. The Canadian Dollar slipped to the lowest price in more than one week against the U.S. currency despite a Bank of Canada survey showing that most businesses remain optimistic about the future of the economy. The currency was also weighed down by skepticism in the markets as investors remain pessimistic that the meeting of European Finance Ministers will yield a tangible solution to the debt crisis.

The sheer fact the Euro region?s Finance Ministers agreed to meet to discuss the debt crisis was enough to bolster the Euro?s strength, causing it to rebound from two-year lows versus the U.S. Dollar. The 17-nation currency rallied against the Yen after the European Central Bank?s President, Mario Draghi, suggested the bank?s officials may consider another interest rate cut should the economy necessitate such a move. The Euro erased early day losses after the European Commission stated that future capitalization of the region?s banks by the ESF won?t require a ?sovereign guarantee.? But sentiment remained fragile after official reports confirmed Investor Confidence fell the most since July of 2009. The British Pound traded higher against the greenback through its advance was limited as investors continued to worry over the sovereign debt crisis.

The U.S. Dollar steadied against Japan?s Yen after weak Chinese economic releases supported demand for refuge. The Yen remained under pressure on reports showing Japan?s Trade Surplus slipped to its lowest level since 1985 and Machine Orders plummeted the most in seven years.

Lastly, the South Pacific currencies declined against the U.S. Dollar as worries over global growth weighed on risk appetite. Metrics indicating that China?s Consumer and Producer Prices eased more than forecast in June fueled concerns that the world?s second biggest economy has slowed down.

?

EUR/USD- Euro Rebounds From 2-Year Low

The Euro recovered from two-year lows, as the region?s Finance Ministers met to discuss possible measures to solve the debt crisis. But sentiment towards the shared currency remained fragile after ECB President Mario Draghi reiterated comments from last week wherein he suggested the bank?s actions point to a slowdown in growth. Prior to his speech before Parliament, Mr. Draghi indicated that inflation would probably drop below 2% in 2013. On the data front, Investor Confidence in the E.U. plummeted to the lowest since summer of 2009, and remained in negative territory. According to the Sentix Group, Investor Confidence fell from -28.9 to -29.6.

?

GBP/USD- Pound Makes Slight Gains

The British Pound gained against the U.S. Dollar though gains were capped by sustained concerns over the Euro-zone?s debt crisis. The Pound was also weighed on by worries over the outlook for global growth, especially since China reported disappointing economic data. Official figures revealed that China?s Consumer Price Inflation grew at the slowest pace in more than two years, and the future is uncertain; according to Premier, Wen Jiabao, the nation?s economy still faces ? downward pressures.?

?

USD/JPY- Trade Surplus Slumps

The U.S. Dollar steadied against the Japanese Yen after the country?s Ministry issued an announcement indicating May?s Trade Surplus contracted to 0.28 trillion Yen in May after it had posted a surplus of 0.29 trillion in April. These figures disappointed investors who expected a surplus increase to 0.42 trillion Yen. Other data revealed that Core Machinery Orders fell more than expected. According to the figures, the orders dropped 14.8 % in May. The Yen also dipped versus the Euro in anticipation of the meeting of Finance Ministers.

?

USD/CAD- Loonie Weakens Most In One Week

The Canadian Dollar dropped the most in more than one week against its U.S. counterpart as risk aversion continued to dominate market sentiment. The Loonie slipped in tandem with commodity-related currencies like the Australian and New Zealand Dollars while investors eye the outcome of the meeting between the Euro region?s Finance Ministers. According to analysts, worries over the Spanish yields is weighing on sentiment, and bolstering flight from risk. Spain?s 10-year yields reached 7.11 % reversing last week?s drop.

?

Today?s Outlook

Today?s economic calendar shows that the U.K. will report on Industrial Production MoM and YoY, Trade Balance, Manufacturing Production and the NIESR GDP Estimate. Canada will issue data on Housing Starts. Japan will release the Tertiary Industry Activity Index. And Australia will issue the Westpac Consumer Sentiment and Home Loans.

Yonathan Melaku, Ex-Marine Who Fired Shots At Pentagon, Claims Mental Illness

ALEXANDRIA, Va. -- Lawyers for an ex-Marine from Virginia facing 25 years in prison for firing shots at the Pentagon, the Marine Corps museum in Quantico and other buildings say their client is mentally ill.

Yonathan Melaku of Alexandria pleaded guilty earlier this year to a series of overnight shootings at various military buildings in northern Virginia. No one was injured. As part of a plea deal, he agreed to a 25-year sentence.

In court papers Wednesday, Melaku's new lawyers ask for a court-ordered mental examination. They say their own psychiatrist, Neil Blumberg, has concluded Melaku is schizophrenic after reviewing his medical records and interviewing him for five hours at the jail.

The motion does not seek to overturn Melaku's conviction and it is not clear whether any determinations about Melaku's mental health could affect his guilty plea.

When Melaku entered his plea, his lawyer at the time, Gregory English, requested a mental evaluation so that his client could be placed at the federal medical prison in Butner, N.C. But at the time, English took pains to say that any mental health problems that plagued Melaku did not rise to the level that they called his competency into question.

In Wednesday's motion, Melaku's new lawyers, Geoffrey Gitner and Billy Martin, called that assertion "shocking due to the fact that prior counsel failed to ever have Mr. Melaku examined by a psychiatrist or other mental health practitioner."

Blumberg has performed mental evaluations in numerous legal cases, including several high-profile defendants. In 2003, he testified that teenager Lee Boyd Malvo was legally insane at the time of the 2002 D.C. sniper shootings, based on indoctrination he endured from his partner in the murders, John Allen Muhammad. The jury rejected Malvo's insanity defense and sentenced him to life in prison.

Gitner did not respond to a phone call Wednesday afternoon.

Prosecutors have previously said they have no reason to believe Melaku was suffering from any serious mental health issues at the time of the shootings.

Melaku was arrested last year when he was spotted after dark in Arlington National Cemetery with a backpack containing potential explosives material and notations referring to jihad and Osama bin Laden. That arrest set off a security scare in and around the Pentagon.

The evidence against Melaku includes a video that he made in which he is seen firing shots at the National Museum of the Marine Corps as he drives by from Interstate 95, where the museum is easily visible. In the video, Melaku shouts "God is Great!" in Arabic and talks about targeting the museum and "turning it off permanently."

The overnight shootings in October and November of 2010 twice targeted the Marine Corps museum and once each targeted the Pentagon and military recruiting stations in Woodbridge and Chantilly.

Melaku's sentencing is scheduled for July 20.
